Free Agency 2012: UFA Alexander Semin Criticised by TSN panel
Alexander Semin's character and commitment to the game has been called into question by the media countless times.
Since inking a one-year $6 million contract extension with the Capitals following an 84 point season in 2010, he has been often criticised by the media for his perceived lack of commitment and effort on the ice.
Semin was relentlessly slammed by TSN analysts Marc Crawford and Pierre McGuire during the networks free agency coverage Sunday.
“You either take a guy who’s a complete winner, or take a guy who’s a complete loser. He falls in that category," said Crawford.
"This is not a great teammate," said McGuire.
Semin's criticism sprouts from the frustration of coaches, teammates and fans. An immensely talented forward with natural scoring ability who is being judged far too harshly. Although his commitment level at times has been questionable, Semin remains a effective player.
Semin may be in need of a small attitude adjustment, but he is no "loser".
To dump Semin into "that category," is unwarranted. Semin has posted consecutive seasons with a respectable 54 points and is ranked 5th on the Capital's all-time goals list.
His career numbers are nearly identical to those of Zach Parise, the hottest item currently on the UFA market. Zach Parise is also no loser.
It is expected that Parise will bring in next season almost twice as much as Semin's $6.7 million earned last year.
The media will have its effect. Semin's stock is slumping, NHL clubs must take advantage. Semin is a steal for any club willing to take a chance on him.
The current front-runners for Semin's services are the Detroit Red Wings. Fellow Russian and NHL veteran Pavel Datsyuk could provide the kick in the pants Semin needs to realize his full potential and take his career seriously. When Semin is switched on he's good, very good. There's no reason to believe he can't do the same on a line with Datsyuk as he did with Alex Ovechkin.
Surrounded by the right team Semin can be one of the best in the league. Possessing elite offensive talent, Semin has the ability to deke opposing defenders out of their jocks. His reputation in the media has him ranked below Parise as a free agent, but any team willing to place their chips on the sometimes enigmatic winger could wind up being the big-winner this July.
