'Q' drops two against Russia

It was not under the most ideal of circumstances that the QMJHL All-Stars undertook the 2010 Subway Super Series rematch against Team Russia on Wednesday night. Game #1 saw the Russians capitalize on their chances during a hard-fought third period to come out on top of the 5-4 score. Unfortunately, the representatives of the 'Q' did not fare much better at Drummondville's Centre Marcel Dionne, as they were this time on the wrong end of a 4-3 final.

Much like the first game, Team QMJHL would begin with the lead only to see the game tied again later. Midway into the second period, the Russians scored to make it 3-2 and held their first lead of the game. Phoenix Coyotes' first rounder Brandon Gormley tied things up again on the power play with a blast from the point to start the third period, but Russia's Artemiy Panarin restored his team's advantage shortly thereafter. Despite many offensive rushes during the final minutes Team QMJHL could not find a way to put another puck behind Russian goalkeeper Emil Garipov, who faced 49 shots on net compared to the combined total of 22 shots faced by New Jersey Devils' prospect Maxime Clermont and Phoenix Coyotes' prospect Louis Domingue.

Top 2011 prospect Sean Couturier was the acting captain of the QMJHL squad, and registered a team-leading 7 shots on net for this game, a mark tied by his Drummondville Voltigeurs' teammate Jonathan Brunelle. Couturier registered two assists for his cause and was named as one of the players of the game.

Montreal Juniors forwards Louis Leblanc and Louis-Marc Aubry were new additions to the roster for Game #2. Leblanc, coming off an upper body injury, put up an assist and added four shots on goal whereas three of Detroit prospect Aubry's attempts hit the net.

The John Labatt Centre in London, Ontario will be the next to host the event, as Team OHL sets up to take on Team Russia Thursday night at 7 p.m. As with all the 2010 Subway Super Series games, fans can tune in on Sportsnet both live and online to catch a glimpse of the action. Next Wednesday night the series moves to the WHL.

I heard new Habs prospect Bournival did pretty well... might be getting himself on the list of consideration for Team Canada.
