Sea Dogs Win QMJHL Title
The Saint John Sea Dogs are President's Cup Champions.
It may as well have been a full seven-game series (and thensome), as four extra periods were needed to seal the deal on the 2010-2011 QMJHL season. The winning goal in Game 6 was scored by Alexandre Beauregard, his first of the playoffs, with just over four minutes left in the fifth (!) period. Stanislav Galiev opened the scoring at 4:12 of the first before Philip-Michaël Devos countered for the Olympiques, and the two teams were deadlocked at 1 until well into the third. Gatineau's Adam Janosik gave his team the lead for the first time with five minutes to go, and the two clubs seemed poised to head into a seventh and deciding game until there were only twenty-three seconds left in regulation, where Jonathan Huberdeau tied the game once again.
With Beauregard's clincher, the Sea Dogs, kings of home ice during the regular season, put the exclamation point on their 10-0 record on road ice during the playoffs. Huberdeau became the fourth QMJHLer aged seventeen to take home playoff MVP honours. Saint John will now join the host Mississauga St. Michael's Majors, Owen Sound Attack (OHL Champions) and Kootenay Ice (WHL Champions) at the MasterCard Memorial Cup, set to begin this Friday and wrapping up in the Championship Game on Sunday, May 29th.
