Bouwmeester Singing the Blues

The fire sale has officially begun in Calgary.

Five days after dealing Jarome Iginla to Pittsburgh, the Flames have now traded defenceman Jay Bouwmeester to St. Louis for defenceman Mark Cundari, goaltender Reto Berra, and the Blues first round pick in this years draft.

If the Blues miss the playoffs this year, the 1st round pick turns into a 4th in this years draft and a 2014 first round pick.

Bouwmeester arrived amongst fan fare in Calgary despite having zero playoff experience in his six years with Florida. He was promptly signed to a five year $33.4 million contract.

He immediately disappointed as then head coach Brent Sutter under utilized his skill set by keeping Bouwmeester contained to his own blue line. It was only this year, under Bob Hartley, that Flames fans got a chance to see the real Jay Bouwmeester. His six goals through 34 games this season were more than he had in 82 games the past three seasons.

He hasn't missed a game since the 2004 season as he holds the current ironman streak in the NHL. He also holds the dubious honor of most games played without playing in the playoffs -- a title I'm sure he will look to shed in the near future, but nothing is confirmed as the Blues are on the bubble of the playoffs.

Now, three and half seasons later and still no playoff experience, Bouwmeester is on the move again.

The return for Bouwmeester was interesting and not enough it might seem.

Cundari is a small (5-foot-9) defenceman with some offensive upside, while Berra is a very unknown commodity playing in the Swiss Elite League.

The Flames however, now possibly hold three first round picks in this year's draft, depending on whether or not the Blues make the playoffs this season.

Calgary is currently being pumped by their northern neighbours as Kipper was yanked after three goals on only six shots.

Clearly, the trade talks blowing in from Toronto are having an effect on Kipper's mental state.

The rats are leaving this sinking ship. The Flames haven't hit rock bottom yet, but be sure that it is coming soon.
