Rangers On Verge of Adding Former King Frolov
There are rumors circulating via twitter and some Ranger blogs including http://www.snyrangersblog.com/, that former Kings' winger Alexander Frolov is nearing an agreement with the Rangers. These reports are citing a comment made by Frolov's agent, Sergei Isakov, that Frolov is nearing agreement on a 1 year deal.
Nothing is confirmed yet as the usual suspects (TSN, ESPN, Steve Zipay, etc.) have been silent on the subject.
If true I like this for the Rangers. They need a boost offensively and by only committing a single season to Frolov they will hopefully benefit from a guy with a chip on his shoulder and looking to improve his marketability for next season.
Frolov's scoring totals have decreased each of the last 3 seasons; which combined with his asking price ($4 million+) and with many teams not having the luxury of a lot of cap room, conspired to lower interest.
Frolov is still just 28 years-old and has averaged 25.7 goals for every 82 games played. He tallied 32 markers in 2008-2009 and his talents will be welcomed on Manhattan.
Hopefully, if the rumors are true, Frolov will not turn into Zherdev version 2.0. Both players are extremely skilled but tend to disappear for stretches. Torts isn't the kind of coac to tolerate those lapses.
More on this later when either confirmed or definitively debunked.
Update: Arthur Staple of Newsday is saying they are talking and the Kings are out. NYR or KHL for Alex. Here's the link to Arthur Staple's tweet: http://twitter.com/StapeNewsday
Update (3:40 PST): ESPN has jumped on the bandwagon citing a source close to the situation. Here's their link: http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nhl/news/story?id=5411824
Adam Rotter over at snyrangersblog links to Scott Burnside of ESPN saying discussions are close to a conlclusion on his twitter. Also cites Darren Dreger as saying the sides are near a deal. Link for your approval: http://www.snyrangersblog.com/
By the way; Adam Rotter does a great job over at snyrangersblog.com. I saw a lot of my fellow Ranger fans referencing and took a look for myself. He's churning out new stuff constantly through the day and includes some of his own commentary to accompany it. For a Rangers fan he's pretty mellow and realistic. Check his stuff out!!
UPDATE (Tuesday 3:55 PM PST): Done deal. 1 year at $3 million. Ponikarovsky signed same deal in LA. I like Frolov better than Poni for us; he brings more skill to the table. Supposedly turned away from 4 year, $20 million offer from KHL. Evidently Frolov really wants to be a Ranger and that's good. Now he has to deliver the goods.
