No Goals Means No Win
Gomez has not scored in a year, Ovechkin coming off suspension and pout. Hopefully Ovi is still in pouting mode and Gomez scores (even if open net - not proud - beggars cannot be choosers.) The healthy scratches for this afternoons game were Blunden and Weber. which means Campoli playing as 7th defenseman/12th forward. The goalies Vokoun and Budaj. Budaj playing his 250th game of his career.
First period started with a good scoring chance for the Habs and a lot of energy on both sides. Good scoring chances for bith sides. Good flow to the game. Dimitri Orlov stopped a shot from Gorges with his face about halfway through the period. Dennis Wideman shot a knucklepuck off a faceoff won by Laich to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead. Other than the goal Budaj played well in the first turning away 10 out of 11 shots. The Gomez watch continues...he had a few good shifts and was not booed.
The second period was rather lackluster with both sides playing decent defensive hockey about half-way through the period Habs had a great chance with Desharnais being robbed by a sprawling defenseman, on the ensuing attack Budaj's stick went out of his hand in the direction of Brouwer and he was awarded a penalty shot. Budaj stopped the penalty shot and was rewarded by having his name chanted by the crowd in Montreal. The save seemed to bring the Habs back to life and they played quite well in the second half of the period. Unfortunately they were unable to put one past Vokoun but did charge the net making his life a little more difficult.
The third period started with both teams playing a little defensively. The Capitals scored during a goal mouth scramble making the score 2-0. The Capitals were given a second penalty shot when Kaberle was caught trying to stop Semin on a breakaway - Semin scored a beautiful shot making the score 3-0. The second goal sucked what life the Habs had left. Another third period letdown.
Over 216 minutes without scoring on the Capitals at home. Really - Third straight shutout at home delivered by the Washington Capitals.
