Blackhawks roll over Red Wings in Easter morning showcase
The anticipation was high for Sunday's Blackhawks-Red Wings game; after all, their last match up had been a thrilling 2-1 Chicago shootout victory to start the month off.
Today's game lacked the same tension, as Chicago roared out to a 3-0 lead in just over four minutes. Detroit barely looked like they were playing on the same sheet of ice for most of the game.
Jeremy Morin, freshly called up from the AHL, scored his first NHL goal of the season on his first shot on his first shift. Brandon Saad scored again less than a minute later.
Detroit's Jakub Kindl intercepted a Dave Bolland pass soon after that, but Jimmy Hayes, crashing the net, created enough pressure that Kindl instead put a goal in behind Jimmy Howard. Bolland was credited with the goal; the first he has had in several weeks.
While the Red Wings closed the door for the rest of the period, the Blackhawks would pry it wide open early in the second. Jonathan Toews scored his 17th of the season at 3:52; Detroit yanked Howard at that point and put Jonas Gustavsson in.
Rookie sensation Brandon Saad put in his second of the afternoon only 8 seconds later.
Bolland put in his second goal of the day - this one off his own stick - and Nick Leddy made it 7-0 with under four minutes left in the third.
It looked like Chicago's Corey Crawford would get another shut out, but Detroit had persistance around the net, and Cory Emmerton scooped one in with just 33 seconds left on the clock. Crawford is now 14-4-3 with 1.97 GAA and .925 sv% for the season thus far.
Detroit will return to Chicago for their fourth and final match of the season on April 12th. Chicago leads the series 3-0-0.
The Blackhawks return to Chicago for a game against the Nashville Predators on Monday night at 7:30pm CDT. The Predators and Blackhawks have only met once this season; they will face each other four times in the next three weeks.
