Game Day : Jets @ Habs
The Winnipeg Jets are in town tonight to face off against the Habs in Montreal's first game of the new year. While 2011 will forever be remembered by the Jets, the Habs are ready to forget it and move on. New year, new start, new hope. Let's take a look at the match up.
Finishing the year up with success, the Jets went 6-3-1 in their last ten games and are on a 3 game winning streak heading into tonight's game. Included in those wins was a a game against the Habs where the Jets shut out Montreal 4-0. Forwards Blake Wheeler and Evander Kane are paving the way for some of the youth to shine in Winnipeg, Wheeler and Kane combine for 57 points on the year.
Despite the incredibly frustrating hockey the Canadiens have been producing this season, there is one huge positive that Habs fans can take comfort in and that is the aquisition of Erik Cole. Cole took a few games to get going but has quickly become the only consistent player on the ice for Montreal most nights. Cole's enjoyed a great December putting up 12 points (8-4-12) and doesn't seem to be slowing down. Have the Habs found the scorer they have lacked for years?
While injuries have been the biggest excuse for the Habs this season, the Jets have proven you can be successful despite missing some of your best players. The Jets are without blueliner Dustin Byfuglien and forwards Bryan Little and Randy Jones. Perhaps they have not been out the entire season, but they have missed the last few games and Winnipeg still finds ways to win.
The Habs injury list remains the same as usual. Markov, Gionta, Gomez and White all remain out of the lineup.
Starting goalies have not been confirmed yet, but you can assume that Carey Price and Ondrej Pavelec will be getting the starts.
Game time is at 7:30pm and is being aired on RDS.
