Blackhawks v Blues: Game Preview

TCL Blackhawks

CHI @ STL

4/27/13

7:00pm CST

The Chicago Blackhawks have clinched the Central Division, the Presidents’ Trophy, the No. 1 spot in the Western Conference playoffs, and hold the record for longest point streak in the NHL.  All that is a good indicator of why top players Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Marian Hossa, Patrick Sharp, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook and Niklas Hjalmarsson did not make the trip to St. Louis for their final game of the regular season.

The Blackhawks (36-6-5) defeated the Blues (28-17-2) in a very physical 2-0 shutout victory the last time the two teams met.  That physical intensity St. Louis brought to the ice in their last bought might be another reason Coach Joel Quenneville has decided to rest his core players; this close to the post season, there is no sense in risking injury for a game that essentially doesn’t matter.

On the other hand, this game does matter for St. Louis, who can lock in their fourth place standing in the WC playoffs and secure home-ice advantage for the first round with a victory Saturday night.

The Blackhawks have gotten at least a point from each of their last four meetings with the Blues, but tonight will put the third and fourth lines of the Hawks to the test without it’s leading goal scorers.

Corey Crawford was in goal for the Hawks’ 3-1 victory over the Calgary Flames last night, but could sit tonight to take a break.  In Ray Emery’s absence (lower back injury), Carter Hutton could get the start between the pipes against St. Louis.

Dave Bolland may also take the night off to fully recover from his injury as well.

Puck drops at 7:00pm in the Scottrade Center.
