Blackhawks power past the Wings 4-1
Well the only thing the Blackhawks needed to spark them was Marian Hossa. Number 81 came back to the Hawks lineup in style with a goal and a couple of assists as he powered the Hawks past his old team and old Hawks rival the Detroit Red Wings. This was a game that the Hawks desperately needed to get back on track.
The game saw Corey Crawford in goal for the Blackhawks and Jimmy Howard in nets for the Red Wings. The first period was fast paced and tight and was scoreless.
You could say if Hossa powered the Hawks to victory Ben Smith iginited them in the second period with a goal and an assist. The Blackhawks scoring got started by a Nick Leddy blast from the far point that was a bomb that got past Howard with Ben Smith providing a screen in front on the power play. Hossa got an assist as well on the Leddy goal.
To keep things interesting and to not be out done the lone Red Wings tally came on a power play of their own when Gustav Nyquist was able to get a multi deflected puck past Crawford to tie the game at one apiece.
The Hawks did not panic or lose composure unlike their recent games they stuck with it and it paid off late in the second when Ben Smith struck. Off of the cycle with a crowd in front of Howard the ever hard working Smith was able to get position in front of the Wings goal and put one past Howard for the period to end 2-1 Hawks.
If the second period was Ben Smith’s, the third period was Marian Hossa’s as he took over the game with a goal and another assist. Hossa powered past the Red Wings defense on a four on four to get the Hawks third goal of the game on a beautiful pass from Patrick Sharp and then to ice it he provided a steal on the penalty kill to set up Jonathan Toews with a shorthanded goal.
Duncan Keith also had a very strong game with two assists. The only bad thing was Brandon Saad left the game and did not return with an injury. Everyone is hoping for Saad to have a speedy recovery.
The Hawks played well but the Red Wings were very depleted with injuries. The real test will be in the up coming week. The Hawks will have to bring a strong team game with them and some muscle against the Philadelphia Flyers that they face next.
Things won’t get any easier for the Hawks because they then face the Blues in the second of back to back games. If they maintain their composure as they did against the Wings it should serve them well coming down the stretch. Things are definitely heating up,
Three Stars of the game:
1. Marian Hossa
2. Ben Smith
3. Duncan Keith
