Hawks fall to Capitals 3-2

In a preview of the Winter Classic that Blackhawks took on the Washington Capitals only at the United Center.  The game had Corey Crawford in nets for the Hawks and the Capitals had Braden Holtby in their nets.

The Hawks had complete control of the game for the first thirty five minutes of the game and were seemingly cruising to a home victory until the Capitals onslaught in the last five minutes of the second period with three goals at the end of the period by Andre Burakovsky, Marcus Johansson & Joel Ward to put the Capitals up 3-2 at the end of two periods.  Matt Niskanen provided assists on two of the goals.

The first Burakovsky goal seemed to spark Washington and give them confidence. The goal was a two on one by the Capitals that caught an ill timed pinch by Brent Seabrook leaving Keith the sole defenseman back. -

The Hawks started the scoring on a beauty of a two on one with Marian Hossa flying down the near boards holding until the last second and then passing to a streaking down the far side Brandon Saad who netted one past Holtby.  Andrew Shaw got the other assist.

The first period ended with the Hawks up 1-0 but late in the period Alex Ovechkin took a run a Nik Hjalmarsson in a hit that was high to the head and questionable.

The second period started perfectly for the Hawks as they had the Ovechkin penalty still in force and were on the power play when Duncan Keith blasted one from the far faceoff circle with an Shaw screen past Holtby to take what looked like a commanding 2-0 lead.

The Hawks went into the third down a goal and maybe more importantly needing to get control of the game back but the Hawks looked lifeless and out of synch. Much like most of the games of late they dominated in shots on goal and good possession numbers but it failed to result in any goals. The Capitals went into a defensive shell collapsed in front of the Capitals goal not giving the Hawks much.

The Hawks quite frankly look bored and like they are sleepwalking through these games. All of these games are starting to look like re-runs with just the opponent’s jerseys changing.

The Hawks are now 7-6-1 on the year. If the Hawks do not wake up soon with the good teams in their own division and in the west they may find themselves waking up too late. Right now the best hockey team wearing the red, white and black reside in Rockford.

Three Stars of the game:

1.     A. Burakovsky

2.     D. Keith

3.     M. Niskanen
