Caps blasted by Stars 5-2

The Caps headed into tonight's clash with the Dallas Stars as the only team with an undefeated home record at 6-0.

That ended quickly as the Stars ambushed the Caps in the third period at Verizon Center tonight by scoring three consecutive goals to win 5-2.

The Stars got three points from Jamie Benn, including a goal and two assists and Michael Ryder added two goals. The visiting Stars also got goals from Adam Burish and Eric Nystrom.

Caps goals came from Alexander Semin, who opened the scoring for the Caps on the power play in the first and John Carlson, who ripped a laser by Lehtonen in the second at even-strength to tie the game at 2-2.

Nicklas Backstrom recorded an assist on Semin's power play goal in the first, extending his points steak to a modest five games.

Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen was impressive in turning aside 30 of 32 Capitals shots on the evening, easily outdueling counterpart Michal Neuvirth, who stopped 31 of 36 Stars shots on the night.

The Caps managed just seven shots in the decisive third period, which saw the Stars score three goals on 10 shots on Neuvirth. Dallas netted the three goals in the first 8 minutes of the period, starting the scoring with an Adam Burish even-strength marker just 24 seconds in to break the tie at 3-2.

Benn's fifth goal of the season on the power play gave the Stars some insurance at 4-2 and Nystrom's goal sealed the deal at 5-2 Stars.

Washington was 1 for 4 on the power play with the goal coming from Semin in the first, Dallas converted 1 of 5, with Jamie Benn potting the PPG.

The Caps were flat in the third and clearly were outhustled by the Stars, who won countless puck battles all over the ice in the third. The Caps played a strong 40 minutes of hockey and had themselves in a 2-2 game before watching the wheels fall off in the last 20 mins.

Bruce Boudreau is going to be looking for a complete 60 minutes from his squad when the Caps head into a home and home series with the New Jersey Devils this weekend starting with a road trip to the Garden State on Friday.
