Caps blow late lead, fall to Jets in SO 3-2
With 2:15 left in regulation and a 2-0 lead, the Washington Capitals appeared to be well on their way to another win over a division foe on Thursday night.
Then the unthinkable happened.
Visiting Winnipeg wouldn't go away quietly and got goals from Evander Kane and Dustin Byfuglien just 12 seconds apart to force overtime. After five scoreless minutes of sudden death, the game the Caps once had in had was headed to the decisive shootout.
In the first round, both Alex Ovechkin and Blake Wheeler scored. Then in the second round, Alex Semin was stoned by Ondrej Pavelec before Bryan Little bested Tomas Vokoun to give the Jets a 2-1 lead in the shootout. With the game on Mathieu Perreault's stick, he deked and was bested by the pads of Pavelec to seal the loss.
Despite the late collapse, the Capitals managed an all-important point by getting the game to overtime. That became even more important as the team chasing the Caps, the Florida Panthers, held on to beat the Los Angeles Kings.
After two scoreless periods, the Caps came out like dogs on raw meat in the third, getting powerplay goals from Ovechkin and Semin about four minutes apart before the late collapse. The goal was Ovechkin's third in his past two games and his 23rd on the season, he also assisted on Semin's 14th of the season. Semin assisted on Ovechkin's first goal to give the enigmatic Russian 33 points in 50 games this season.
Evander Kane started the comeback for the Jets with his 19th goal of the season from captain Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien. Byfuglien then added the tying goal just 12 seconds later with an unassisted slap shot past Tomas Vokoun, who made 25 saves in the loss.
All four goals scored in the game, which were all scored in the third period, were also all on the powerplay.
Washington gets Friday and Saturday off before visiting Madison Square Garden to take on the East-leading Rangers and then playing host to the red-hot San Jose Sharks on Monday at Verizon Center.
