Caps stuffed by Rangers 6-3 on Black Friday

After opening up a 3-0  lead on the road, the New York Rangers never looked back.

Ruslan Fedotenko scored twice for New York, who also got goals from Brad Richards, Artem Anisimov, Marian Gaborik and Brian Boyle to defeat the Washington Capitals 6-3 on Black Friday at Verizon Center.

The Rangers opened up a 3-0 lead early in the second period lead thanks to goals from Gaborik, Fedotenko and Anisimov.

Washington responded with back-to-back goals from Troy Brouwer and John Carlson to come within a goal at 3-2 at 12:52 of the second period. But a Brian Boyle goal off a brutal turnover by Marcus Johansson in his own zone stretched the Ranger lead to 4-2 before the horn.

In the third, Brad Richards started the scoring for the Broadway Blue shirts with his 7th of the year on a tip-in off a Ryan Callahan shot to make it 5-2. Caps captain Alex Ovechkin answered about a minute later with his first goal at home this season, and 8th of the season to pull the Caps closer at 5-3.

But as was the case all day, the Rangers had an answer. Ruslan Fedotenko's second goal of the game, and 3rd of the season at 11:40 sealed the Caps' Black Friday fate with a 6-3 loss.

Neither goaltender was very good, with Henrik Lundquist getting the win by stopping 18 of just 21 Capitals shots. Michal Neuvirth wasn't any better, stopping 27 of 33 shots in taking the loss.

Washington outhit the visiting Rangers 40-28, but was badly outshot and outchanced by their counterparts. Bruce Boudreau's club was badly outplayed in periods two and three after a strong showing in the first.

It was important, despite the loss, for Ovechkin to see the puck go in the net. The struggling star winger hadn't registered a goal yet at Verizon Center and hadn't scored there since last year's playoffs in game 2. Hopefully a sign of good things to come for the Russian sniper.

As bad as the Caps played today, they get another shot tomorrow night in upstate New York when they take on the Buffalo Sabres at 7 pm.
