Chimera lifts Caps over Jets in OT
Jason Chimera leads the Washington Capitals with 8 goals. Not Alex Ovechkin, Alex Semin or Nicklas Backstrom, the man who had just 10 goals all of last year does.
With his overtime winner over the Winnipeg Jets tonight, Jason Chimera now is two goals shy of last season's total after just 20 games. How's that for secondary scoring.
The Caps also got goals from Alex Semin and Nicklas Backstrom in addition to Chimera's two tallies. Semin scored his 6th goal of the season just one game after being benched by coach Bruce Boudreau.
Alex Ovechkin hit the scoring sheet on a beautiful pass to setup Semin's goal in the first period. Ovie turned on the jets so to speak and spotted Semin down the right wing.
Just 1:52 into overtime, Marcus Johansson tipped a puck to Dennis Wideman trailing behind the play, Wideman swooped in and spotted Chimera parked in front of the net to bury the game-winner for the Caps.
The Caps played a high-energy game and forechecked rather aggresivley all game, frustrating Dustin Byfuglien and Co. for the Jets.
Winnipeg, making its first visit to the nation's capital since 1995, got goals from captain Andrew Ladd, Kyle Wellwood and Bryan Little. The team lost for the first time in its last four games.
Tomas Vokoun made 22 saves on 25 shots to earn the win for the Caps while Ondrej Pavelec took the loss for the Jets while stopping 33 of 37 shots.
Game Puck: Goes to Jason Chimera for the OT winner. He leads the Caps in goals right now and has elevated his game in 2011.
Washington takes a day off for the holiday but is back at it when they face the New York Rangers Friday at 4 pm.
