Game #13: Caps face surprising Stars
The Caps welcome the Western Conference-leading Dallas Stars tonight at Verizon Center in a clash of early season powers. The Stars (10-3, 20 points) lead the West, while the Caps (9-3, 18 points) find themselves near the top of the East.
After losing All-Star center Brad Richards to free-agency, it would be easy to cast aside the Stars this season. But the team has responded with a fast start behind balanced scoring from forwards Jamie Benn, Loui Eriksson and outstanding goaltending from Kari Lehtonen.
The Fin Lehtonen is 10-1 with a 2.14 GAA and a .936 save pct. this season, and has enjoyed success since arriving in Dallas prior to last season after spending the first four and a half years of his career with the now defunct Thrashers.
As for the Caps, look for Michal Neuvirth to get the nod in goal tonight as Tomas Vokoun's numbers against the Stars aren't pretty, 6-18-1 with a 2.64 GAA and a .902 save pct. Neuvy has won two of his three games this season, with a GAA of 2.96.
The Caps will look to get Alex Ovechkin going tonight, as he has three goals in five career games against Dallas, The Great 8 is also riding a modest four-game point streak (3G, 3A).
They'll look to tame the Stars without high-scoring defenseman Mike Green yet again, who is still day-to-day according to head coach Bruce Boudreau. Green was hurt with a lower-body injury back on Oct. 22 against the Red Wings.
Tonight's tilt starts at 7 p.m.
Just for kicks, below is a highlight reel goal from Dallas' Jamie Benn, a rising star in this league.
