Game 14, 15: Caps set for home and home series with Devils
The Caps (9-4-0, 18 points) travel to New Jersey tonight to play the Devils in the first of a back to back. The teams play in D.C. on Saturday night.
Alex Ovechkin and Co. are coming off of a home throttling courtesy of the red-hot Dallas Stars, who handled the Caps 5-2 back on Tuesday.
The Devils will be without the services of star forward Ilya Kovalchuck this weekend as he nurses a minor leg injury. Martin Brodeur will get the call in net for the Devils on Friday, with the back-to-back on the schedule, Johan Hedberg will start Saturday.
Brodeur is 2-2 this season with a 3.00 GAA and an .885 SV % in just five games this season. He has won his past two starts, allowing just two goals in each contest in beating the Jets (still feels weird typing that) and Hurricanes.
Rookie Adam Henrique has been hot for the Devils, notching four goals and two assists in his past four games. Caps center Nicklas Backstrom has a five-point scoring steak heading into this weekend.
Injured Caps defenseman Mike Green, who has been nursing a lower-body injury, could play Friday according to coach Bruce Boudreau, if not, he could see action on Saturday.
Boudreau put the team through a grueling bag skate following the teams brutal third period performance against Dallas.
The Caps handled the Devils last season, going 3-1 while outscoring them 15-9 in those games.
Brodeur is 36-16 in his career against the Caps, posting a 2.28 GAA and six shutouts.
Tomas Vokoun figures to get the start tonight, with Michal Neuvirth getting the call on Saturday at the end of the back-to-back.
Vokoun has been solid between the pipes for the Caps early on, going 7-2 with a 2.54 GAA and a .915 SV %.
Tonight's game starts at 7 pm on the Rock, with tomorrow's contest will be back down at Verizon Center, also at 7 pm.
