Day 12 Recap of IIHF World Hockey Championships
After a day off, it was back to work for the first of the quarterfinal games.
Czech Republic vs. United States
The quarterfinals opened with the Czech Republic taking on the United States, and it would become the Jaromir Jagr Show. He would get the Czechs on the board late in the first, making it 1-0, and would add another less than 5:00 into the second. Tomas Plekanec would make it 3-0 halfway through the third, and about 6 minutes later, Jagr would get the hat trick, and giving the Czechs a 4-0 win over Team USA. Czechs to the semifinals. Sweden vs. Germany
Sweden scores very early – only 27 seconds in – on a goal by Martin Thornberg. About a minute and a half later, Alexander Barta would tie the game 1-1. Patrik Berglund would get Sweden back the lead at 15:46. 4:30 into the second, Niklas Persson would make it 3-1. Almost 4 minutes later, they would up that lead to 4-1 when Loui Eriksson tallied. Michael Wolf would cut Sweden’s lead in half in the later stages of the period. Thornberg would round out the scoring near the midway part of the third, and that would be your final score. Sweden wins 5-2 and will play the Czech Republic in the semifinal on Friday.
The other two quarterfinal games take place on Thursday. Finland vs. Norway makes the early game, while the later game has the hotly anticipated match-up of all time: Canada vs. Russia.
