Avs Acquire Elliott for Anderson... WHAT?!

Avs Acquired Elliott for Anderson

The Avs just traded goaltender Craig Anderson for Ottawa's Brian Elliott... WHAT?! Neither team is really going to make a run for a playoff spot yet they make this trade? This one baffles me. Last night there were rumors Andy would be heading for Toronto after the Giguere injury. But no one, and I mean no one saw this coming. I just don't get it. Both goalies are struggling, so the Avs traded one struggling goalie for another? I mean honestly I am starting to get sick of underachieving players the Avs acquire in hopes of a scenery change that might help them find their game.

I will have more on the trade as more details come, maybe what was going on in Anderson's personal life.

As for Andy, last season was amazing and a great ride as an Avalanche goaltender. I was at his amazing playoff performance against The Sharks and was one of the first people to start the first Andy chant. It was amazing to see him the game by himself and will forever be a memory to me. I wish the best for Anderson and hope that he can find his game again.

As for Elliott, I know he was a young good prospect at one point, and hasn't really panned out. Guess the Avs are hoping it was the fact he was playing with Ottawa. But the Avs aren't going to be much different. Big what for this trade overall.

what is everyone's opinion?

Heard Avs have salary issues. But He's UFA. Something is missing from the story.

Salary issues? We are only a mill or so from the cap floor.... it's not a cap move.

Both the Avs goalies were UFAs at the year's end. Anderson has "personal issues" that no one really knows about, Budaj will probably go back to Europe. I don't know who the Avs have in their system but they were faced with a situation that could have left them without a starting goaltender next season.

Elliott isn't exactly all that great, but he's half a decade younger than Anderson and only an RFA at the end of the season. He will come very cheap as he's been sucking, and who knows if he could rebound next year. I think this was the kind of deal to just make sure they have someone with NHL experience in the system next year.

Pretty random though.

well we have John Grahame in the AHL, and he has won two goalie of the month awards already... So we have some experience. Also we have Chet Pickard, Calvin Pickards brother in the system. However it is too early to bring him up.

I think it was either they knew they wouldn't resign him, or something to do with the personal problems that forced this trade. We will see...

Grahame's 35. I'm guessing he's also a UFA so I'd be surprised to see him in the NHL ever again. Habs have Curtis Sanford and he's a top AHL goalie. But he's just that... an AHL goalie. Touché on Chet Pickard, but like you said too early. So at least from a long term standpoint it makes sense to me.

The Sens on the other hand get nothing and take on extra salary... weird

The Sens part is shocking! Word was Andy would go to a contender to try and help them, this is two bad teams giving up the same for the same. The only reason why I think the Avs will win the trade is because Elliott is a RFA and Andy is a UFA...

Long term I feel the Avs will just try in free agency again until Pickard is ready. I hope they let Budaj walk at the end of the season as well.

No kidding! But on a more interesting note, maybe Anderson sticks around and, once healthy, the Sens have two starters battling it out next year - LeClaire and Anderson. Could be a great duo!

"starters" is a strong word Tongue

if he can find his game, he has shown he can take a team on his back...

I really want to know what personal problems he has been having, Adrian Dater from the Denver Post says he knows but doesn't want to spread gossip or anything personal about players.

Also Elliott will not play tomorrow night because of work visa issues.. John Grahame has joined the team to backup Budaj.

agreed.. this does nothing for the Sens except confirm they are tanking just like the Pens did in the middle of the 2000's
