Avs Win Big, but May have Lost more...

Duchene goes down with a bad injury

Well the Avs ended the home and home with Minnesota sweeping both games and getting back in the playoff picture.  The Avs are now tied with San Jose and Los Angeles for 8th and one point back of 7th.  Man does the loss to Columbus continue to sting in the standings.  Even though the Avs routed Minny 7-1, it was the beginning of the third period that took the spotlight away from the goals.  While skating up ice, Matt Duchene lost the puck between his skates and trying to get the puck back stepped on a Wild players stick.  What ensued was a bad scene as Duchene's ankle buckled underneath him and he crumpled in pain.  After being attended to by trainers Matt had to be helped off the ice not putting any pressure on the ankle.  This could be pretty bad for Duchene who just came back from a knee injury that had him out for a month.

Now before I rant into saying the Avs are done for the season if Duchene isn't around, I will say Duchene hasn't been contributing in the Avs recent success and didn't seem to be back to himself since the knee.  So there is a big chance the Avs can continue to surge into the playoffs without Duchene in the lineup, but it might be easier with him.  Now the Avs will dig deep and use their depth to help them out.  Tomorrow night the Avs take on Nashville who didn't help the team out with their loss to the Kings get a chance at payback.

The Avs need to continue to play tough and hard if they want to make it into the playoffs, which I think is very possible.  The Avs are getting contributions from every line, they have the frontrunner for the calder, and they have a goaltender who is one of the hottest goaltenders in the league with his recent stats.  So watch out Western Conference, an Avalanche is COMING!

Varly continuing strong play

Varlamov has played unbelievably the last 5 games going 4-1 with a .970 save percentage.  That's not a typo, that is just an amazing stat.  His only loss is the bad one at Columbus where he allowed only two goals!  His goals against in those 5 games is less than one!  Varly is definitely playing lights out and the team will need that down the stretch.  Come on NHL, give Varly some love!  Oh and are Cap fans now saying what a steal they got for Varly in the trade over the summer?  A first rounder and then Vokoun to start?  Looks like another deal Sherman may come out on top with.
