Game Preview: Kings Vs Stars

Preview: The Kings (22-13-4; 48 points) head to Dallas to take on the Stars(18-17-3; 39 points) tonight at 5:30.While the Kings are currently in fourth place in the Western Conference the Sharks and Wild are just behind in the standings putting pressure on Los Angeles. There are nine games left in the season and even a playoff spot is not guaranteed. The Stars are in tenth place, nine points back from the Kings.

Tonight’s game will be the fourth of five contests between the teams. Dallas won both games in Los Angeles: On March 7th they won 5-2 and 2-0 on March 21st. The Kings won the most recent game in Dallas with a 3-2 victory on March 31t.

All three games have come down to the third period: each game has been tied going into the final stanza. The Stars erupted for three goals in the final period in the first meeting, two goals in the second meeting, and the Kings outscored the Stars 2-1 in the final period in the most recent game.

Jaromir Jagr crushed the Kings when he was on the Stars. In his two games in Los Angeles the veteran scored three goals. Losing Jagr to the Bruins, the Stars are still searching for their identity. Jagr was a team leader off the ice and the leading scorer on it. With Jagr gone, the Stars rely heavily on Loui Erikkson, Jamie Benn, and Ray Whitney.

In their 4-3 shootout loss in Anaheim, the Kings took 38 shots. The Kings create pressure on a consistent basis but their overall shooting accuracy has been unreliable. In the Kings two losses against the Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen allowed only two goals on 57 shots.  The Kings are tenth in the league with 30.1 shots a game and the Stars are 21st in the league allowing 30.9 shots a game. Tonight’s game will rely on the Kings taking reasonable shots and finishing around the crease.
