Devils Win Overtime thriller over Edmonton, 4-3
New York, NY - The New Jersey Devils (5-10-2) got a huge weight lifted in their 4-3 victory of the Edmonton Oilers (4-8-3) in hockey action on Friday night. The million dollar man Ilya Kovalchuk had a second crack at giving New Jersey a victory and was able to cash in at the 3:27 mark in overtime.
Edmonton who was able to get two quick goals from Colin Fraser in the early parts of the first period held their lead until Alexander Vasyunov struck for the Devils first goal. Vasyunov who struck at the 15:43 mark with the assist by Travis Zajac and Patrik Elias.
The Oilers quickly struck back when Sam Ganger made the score 3-1 at the 5:11 mark of the second period. Brian Rolston cut into the lead for the Devils again at the 16:52 mark. It was in the third period that New Jersey was able to force the overtime frame with a goal from Mattias Tedenby, who was assisted by Andy Greene and Jason Arnott.
That set the stage for Kovalchuk who finally was able to cash in on some well earned redemption. In the cage for New Jersey the returning Martin Brodeur made 21 saves, while Devan Dubnyk made 35 saves in the cage for Edmonton.
The Devils were able to finally treat their fans at the Prudential Center to their first win this season, along with Kovalchuk hopefully now gaining the positive momentum that he needs to get going offensively this season.
New Jersey will now go on a very tough road stretch starting on Monday as they head to Boston for a 7:00 p.m. face-off with the Bruins.
