Christensen nets Shootout Winner in 4-3 victory over Coyotes

New York, NY - The New York Rangers (20-13-1) won a shootout thriller by the score of 4-3 over the Phoenix Coyotes (14-9-7) in hockey action on Thursday night. Eric Christensen was able to tally the game-winning goal in the shootout frame for the victory.

Phoenix was able to tally the first goal of the game on a power play opportunity as Taylor Pyatt recorded a wrist shot at the 1:27 mark of the first period. The Coyotes quickly made the score 2-0 as Adrian Aucoin let go of a wicked slap shot at the 5:53 mark. New York was finally able to cut into that lead and made the score 2-1. The Rangers first goal was tallied on a Dan Girardi wrist shot on a power play opportunity at the 12:07 mark.

The second period would begin with the Coyotes netting a power play opportunity to cushion their lead as Martin Hanzal recorded a wrist shot at the 9:43 mark which made the score 3-1. New York would strike back as Brandon Prust tallied a short handed goal at the 19:54 mark making the score 3-2.

Derek Stephan would propel the two teams into overtime netting the tying goal for the Blueshirts at the 14:17 mark of the third period of play. Christensen would then tally the game-winning goal in the shootout frame to give the Rangers the 4-3 victory.

Rangers keeper Martin Biron started slow, but picked up his game and was stellar in the shootout frame, ending the night with 30 saves. Phoenix keeper Jason LaBarbera was solid himself making 33 saves in the cage.

New York now has an interesting test as they head to Philadelphia to face the reigning Eastern Conference Champions as they have a 1:00 p.m. face-off on Saturday afternoon against the Flyers.
