Rangers get Vanquished by Vokoun in 3-0 loss to Panthers
New York, NY - The New York Rangers (22-15-3) could not ring in the New Year with style, falling to the Florida Panthers (17-17-2) in hockey action on Sunday night. Second star and keeper Tomas Vokoun made 32 saves in helping to lead the Panthers to the victory.
The Panthers struck for their first goal on a power play opportunity at the 11:32 mark of the second period of play. Winger David Booth (10) was able to tally a 21 foot wrister, which was assisted by Mike Santorelli (7) and Dennis Wideman (15) for the 1-0 lead.
Florida would strike twice in the third period, to help them seal their victory. The first time was a 17 foot wrister from Christopher Higgins (6) at the 8:50 mark. Then to make the victory sweeter an empty net goal by Stephen Weiss (12). The center was able to tally the wrister at the 18:30 mark as the Panthers skated away with the 3-0 victory.
In the cage for the Rangers keeper Martin Biron made 33 saves. In the victory Vokoun would help the Panthers get to the .500 mark for the first time in six weeks. This was the keepers fifth shutout of the season and his 43rd overall.
The state of Florida has not been good to the Rangers so far this New Year as they also lost on Saturday night tot the Tampa Bay Lightning. It was another tough overtime loss for New York falling by the score of 2-1.
New York will head back home to Madison Square Garden as they host the Carolina Hurricanes for a 7:00 p.m. face-off on Wednesday night.
