No Balance to Washington Capitals Lines

Balance is good. It's good for a lot of things. It's good for tires. It's good on a beam. It's good on a seesaw.  Having balance on a seesaw is having two riders of near-equal weight who get to enjoy flinging themselves up into the air with the help of the weight of the other rider. Without balance, the lighter of the two riders is stuck up in the air, legs waving wildly, until his fellow rider decides that this ride isn't worth it, gets off and sends his partner crashing back to the ground. Expect a lot of wild waving legs from the Washington Capitals right wingers this season as the team is left-wing heavy. Right now, the right...

Why Alex Semin is still a free agent—but shouldn't be

Now that Zach Parise is off the market and planning how to spend the next 13 years in Minnesota (there’s a broken mirror joke there somewhere), free agent Alex Semin is probably getting a few more phone calls than he was a week ago.

He’s going to be a second prize to a team that was hoping to land Parise. As far as career stats go, he’s about as close a second prize as they come and some team is going to end up with a guy who is not that far removed from a 40-goal season.

But they’re also going to get a guy less further removed from a 21-goal season with 56 penalty minutes, a four-year low for him.

It’s all about ceilings and floors with Sem...

TCL Round 2 Staff Predictions: New York Rangers vs. Washington Capitals

2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs - Eastern Conference SemifinalsNew York Rangers ( 1 ) vs. Washington Capitals ( 7 )  It's not surprising that the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals got to the second round, it's how the got here. The Rangers were taken to the bring of elimination against an eighth seeded Ottawa Senators team who, let's face it, probably had no business being in the playoffs in the first place. The Capitals were not favorites in their series against the Boston Bruins, and had their own troubles on their way to a 7th place finish in the regular season, but with the talent they had, and a ridiculous hot rookie goaltender in Braden Holtby they d...

Flyers host Caps in must-win for both squads

The season is only a few weeks away from being done and the tightness of the division races have heated up immensely.

The Philadelphia Flyers (42-23-8; 92 points) and Washington Capitals (37-30-6; 80 points) are both in the middle of two very important division races. Both teams trail their respective division-leading New York Rangers and Florida Panthers by five points.

Wings Lose to Capitals in First Period

It seems like so long ago when Detroit last won a game, an entire week and a half ago if you can believe it. The Wings last win was against Los Angeles on March 9th. It feels like so much longer though. The Wings did not win one game on their California road trip and now have lost their first game at home against the Washington Capitals. What do you think is keeping the Wings from playing like the Wings?

The Wings fell behind 3 to 0 in the first period and played catch up the rest of the game. There was a lot of talk before the game about how good of a player Alex Ovechkin is, which he proved early on in the game. Ovechkin scored on both power play...

Heart Break Strikes Islanders Country Again

Another late game collapse brings heart break to many Islanders fan. The Islanders held a 3 goal lead with just over a period left in the game and still managed to lose in the game in a shoot out. (Photo Credit Flickr/ Clydeorama)

Caps' Alex Ovechkin suspended three games

The NHL has suspended Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin three games for his hit on Pittsburgh defenseman Zbynek Michalek.

NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety Brendan Shanahan said in his review of the incident that Ovechkin was suspended for charging and leaving his feet while delivering the check.

Replay of the hit clearly showed Ovechkin launch himself into Michalek, which is a violation of the charging rule, rule No. 42.

Further, as Ovechkin launched himself into Michalek, he raised his shoulder toward the head of the player, resulting in a headshot that was deemed "reckless" by Shanahan in...

Caps stuffed by Rangers 6-3 on Black Friday

After opening up a 3-0  lead on the road, the New York Rangers never looked back.

Ruslan Fedotenko scored twice for New York, who also got goals from Brad Richards, Artem Anisimov, Marian Gaborik and Brian Boyle to defeat the Washington Capitals 6-3 on Black Friday at Verizon Center.

The Rangers opened up a 3-0 lead early in the second period lead thanks to goals from Gaborik, Fedotenko and Anisimov.

Washington responded with back-to-back goals from Troy Brouwer and John Carlson to come within a goal at 3-2 at 12:52 of the second period. But a Brian Boyle goal off a brutal turnover by Marcus Johansson in his own zone stretched the Ranger lead to 4-2 before the...

Chimera lifts Caps over Jets in OT

Jason Chimera leads the Washington Capitals with 8 goals. Not Alex Ovechkin, Alex Semin or Nicklas Backstrom, the man who had just 10 goals all of last year does.

With his overtime winner over the Winnipeg Jets tonight, Jason Chimera now is two goals shy of last season's total after just 20 games. How's that for secondary scoring.

The Caps also got goals from Alex Semin and Nicklas Backstrom in addition to Chimera's two tallies. Semin scored his 6th goal of the season just one game after being benched by coach Bruce Boudreau.

Alex Ovechkin hit the scoring sheet on a beautiful pass to setup Semin's goal in the f...

Jets Looking For 4th Consecutive Win

Wednesday night marks the second meeting of the season between two Southeast Division teams when the Washington Capitals (11-7-1) host the Winnipeg Jets (8-9-3).

While the Caps enjoyed their first win in five games, the surging Jets are riding their first 3-game winning streak of the season, which includes a decisive win over the Capitals in Winnipeg on November 17th.

In that game, the Jets were forced to deal with early adversity when Alex Semin scored short-handed 3:53 into the first. Just under 4 minutes later, Evander Kane put home his 1st of 2 goals of the night en route to a 4-1 win for Winnipeg.

The Jets are coming off of another offensively focused...
