The Washington Capitals will play the Montreal Canadiens twice in the span of 11 days in April. Both of the games are in Montreal.

This is the kind of thing that happens when your season schedule gets thrown together. Like they'd say in Montreal, c'est la vie.

But, if anything, the games should be a good measure of how far the Caps have come this season.

Any time the team goes 8-1-1 is good, but check those last 10 games out. There aren't many playoff teams in that stretch.

Say goodbye to some of the longest-standing rivalries in the game, and say hello to some of the most manufactured rivalries in the game. The NHL, NHLPA and NHL Board of Governors approved the new realignment to be put into service starting next year, lasting a minimum of three seasons.

The new plan is contingent on some ridiculous rotation because of lopsided divisions of eight teams in the east, and seven teams in the west. Thanks to the strange geographical landscape that the NHL has employed, teams have had to be at the mercy of some wide open swaths of the United States and Canada that are uninhabited by NHL clubs.

If anyone knows how to not win a game, it's the Washington Capitals.

Despite being outshot through the first two periods, the Caps led the New Jersey Devils 2-1.

Then they took six penalties in 11 minutes, allowed themselves to be outshot 15-2 in the period and flushed an easily winnable game down the toiled in what would be a 3-2 win for the Devils.

The Devils led the Capitals 30-12 in even-strength shots in the game, and the Caps still led.

Winning comes in different shapes and sizes. Stealing a game is winning. Dominating it from beginning to end is winning. Steadily plugging along and being better than the other team is winning.

Welp. That was ugly.

The Capitals visited the Consol Energy Center Thursday evening struggling to get any momentum going this season. They did nothing to buck that trend.

The Caps came out of the gates strong. Mike Ribeiro continued his hot streak, scoring his fourth goal of the season in a sequence that saw Marc-Andre Fleury dramatically fall to the ice, losing his helmet in the process. The first period ended 1-0 in favor of the Caps.

Then the wheels fell off.
