Shock the Conference: Flyers Look to Ride the Lightning

The Flyers are still in desperation mode. Coming off a couple days off, they look to take a pair of points in Tampa Bay, something they failed to do the last three times they visited the Lightning.

Will The Real Tampa Bay Lightning Team Please Stand Up

The first seven games for the Tampa Bay Lightning were a scoring fest. The Bolts netted 37 goals and went 6-1. Over the last four games, three on the road, the Bolts have scored just six goals and lost all four contests.

Tampa Bay is now 6-5 and leads the Carolina Hurricanes and Winnipeg Jets by one point in the Southeastern Division.

The best thing that happened on the Bolts first extended road trip of the season was the cancellation of their game versus the Boston Bruins on Saturday night. (Steven Stamkos photograph/Susan Ferlita)

For One Night, Tom Sestito Sheds His Goon Role

Maybe there is something Peter Laviolette knew that no one else possibly could.

Two years without any goals? No problem. A reputation of being a goon that can’t do anything else? Players can change.

Brought to Philly in a controversial trade that no one agreed with? You have to work with the players you have.

Laviolette has been scrutinized every time he has worked Tom Sestito in the lineup. He is a player that Flyers fans usually love to hate. His reputation is terrible, and he has never given people a reason to think otherwise about him.

But with the injury to Wayne Simmonds, Sestito was placed into the lineup again. And as cliché as it is, it was a reason for him to prove himself.

Sestito's Two Goals Lead Flyers to Victory

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Perhaps in the most unexpected fashion, Tom Sestito's pair of goals led the Flyers to a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Wells Fargo Center.

The Flyers looked to erase the bad loss on January 27 by starting the top line right off the bat. They pressed hard, creating a few scoring chances including two by Tye McGinn on a deflection and a one-timer from the circle, but Lindback turned them both aside.

Flyers Go for Three in a Row in Tampa

The Philadelphia Flyers will look to go for three wins in a row as they continue their excursion in sunny Florida. The high octane Tampa Bay Lightning will hope to erase the Flyers' hopes of continuing the winning streak.

Tampa Bay Lightning Early Season Notes And Numbers

After three games the Tampa Bay Lightning are 2-1 with four points and are first in the Southeast division. While it is all but impossible to glean much information from such a small sample of games, the Bolts are buying into Coach Guy Boucher’s platform and are showing signs of improvement on defense and in the net. "It’s going to be defense first. That’s our mindset, because we’ve got the offense," said Boucher. (Photo/Susan Ferlita)

Tampa Bay opened the season at home on Saturday night with a well earned 6-3 victory over division rival Washington. Martin St. Louis and Eric Brewer each scored two goa...

New York Islanders Vs. Tampa Bay Lightning on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The Islanders face off against The Tampa Bay Lightning at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Martin Luther King Jr. Day at 1 p.m.

The Islanders look to rebound from Saturday's opening night loss on home ice to the New Jersey Devils. The Devils beat the Islanders 2-1 behind strong goaltending from Martin Brodeur and some timely offense from Illya Kovalchuk, Travis Zajac and David Clarkson.

Tampa Bay Lightning Opening Night Roster Set

NHL rosters aren't due until tomorrow at 5:00 pm, but after stating the team that practices on Friday will be the opening night squad, Tampa Bay Lightning coach Guy Boucher has made up his mind on his 2013 team.

At noon today, Mike Angelidis, JT Wyman, Matt Taorminaand Kyle Wilson were placed on waivers with the intent of being sent to Syracuse. This means that defenseman Keith Aulie and forwards Cory Conacher and Pierre-Cedric Labrie have made the team. (Labrie Photo/Linda Hamilton)

2013 NHL Eastern Conference Power Rankings

The 2013 NHL season is no longer an 82 game marathon, but instead is a 48 game dash to the finish line.

Will teams that had multiple players skating in Europe fair better? Will veteran squads win because they will have fresh legs all season long? Only the next few months will tell.

Here are my Eastern Conference power rankings.

1. Pittsburgh Penguins – A healthyEvgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby will lead Pittsburgh deep into the Stanley Cup playoffs. The addition of veteran goalie Tomas Vokoun gives Coach Dan Bylsma a solid option if Marc-Andre Fleury falters.

2. New York Rangers – With the ...
