Blackhawks make trade splashes; face Carolina tonight

Heading into tonight's game versus the Carolina Hurricanes (24-30-7/55 pts/8th in Eastern wild card race), the Blackhawks (37-21-5/3rd in Central) are suddenly bolstered by a lot of new arrivals - and one familiar face sent out of town.

In trades leading up to today's trade deadline, the Blackhawks acquired veteran defenseman Kimmo Timonen from the Flyers, center Antoine Vermette from the Coyotes, and forward Andrew Desjardins from the Sharks. Blackhawks fall to Coyotes in shootout

After two back-to-back road wins, the Blackhawks returned to the United Center for the first game of an eight-night homestand against the Arizona Coyotes. Marian Hossa scored twice, but it wasn’t enough to best the visitors, and the Blackhawks dropped a 3-2 shootout loss in a wild finish.

Phoenix Coyotes take series opening vs Chicago Blackhawks

Going into the Thursday opener between Chicago and Phoenix, most analysts were split on their predictions. Several pointed out that the Coyotes had owned the season series between the two, 3-1; but just as many acknowledged that those games were not some of the Blackhawks' best hockey of the year. Mike Smith has been the difference-maker for Phoenix, while the Chicago goalies have had their share of struggles.
