Doughty Scores OT Winner, Quick Records 6th Shutout in Win

For a game that looked so lackluster one minute and then so well-played the next, Drew Doughty’s controversial overtime winner may be the most fitting way for it to end.

Thirty-eight seconds into the extra frame, Doughty drove towards the left side of the net and switched back to the forehand inches in front of Phoenix’s Mike Smith to slide the puck past his leg. He jarred the net loose with his large frame upon falling, but after review, the net never came completely out of its moorings. Jack...

Strong Start Proves Futile as Kings Fall in Shootout, 2-1

For the way the way tonight’s contest between the Los Angeles Kings and Colorado Avalanche ended, one might think neither team had a clear advantage at any point in the game. However, the Kings did—outshooting the opposition twelve to five, notching one goal and watching another get disallowed all in the first period. The Kings also spent over eight minutes on the power play before Colorado even had a crack at their own man-advantage. So what happened?

Well, missed opport...

Kings Ring in New Year with Decisive 4-1 Victory

Prior to tonight’s game, head coach Darryl Sutter boasted that his team’s power play was “awesome.” Yes, the same power play unit that has capitalized on two of the previous forty-two chances. But 9:03 into the third period of tonight’s tilt with the Vancouver Canucks, Sutter’s high praise looked like it may have been spot on.

When presented with their fifth man-advantage of the evening, Justin Williams deflected a perfect wrist shot from Slava Voynov into the Vancouver net, ...

Kings Dealt Loss in Shootout, 2-1

For the first time in a month, the Kings played on back-to-back nights. And after a solid performance two days ago against the Ducks, they earned a point, yet were dealt an overtime loss at the hands of the division-leading San Jose Sharks.

The first period saw a flurry of chances for the Kings’ offense, which suddenly appeared to be well on their way to busting out of the past month’s offensive funk. Trent Hunter fed a wide-open Dustin Brown in front of the net, but Brown was unable to lift the puck over the out...

Stevens’ Swan Song Falls Flat, Kings Throttled 8-2

Jonathan Bernier knows things have to get better than this soon.

If Thursday’s win versus Columbus was cause for a quiet optimism, tonight’s contest could very well be considered nothing less than rock bottom.

Some might argue it had already been decided halfway through the first period. Less than two minutes had passed before the away team found themselves on their heels and down by two. Both Jonathan Quick (who started) and Jonathan Bernier (who struggled in relief) played less than spectacular and the Kings were downed by the Red Wings’ stifling, and at times, flawless offensive attack. Detroit...

Game Preview: Red Wings vs. Kings

Games at this point in the season shouldn't be filled with so much of it, but today's game has drama written all over it.

The Red Wings and Kings face each other for the second time this season, with the Wings having the series advantage after a 4-1 win in Los Angeles. The Kings are now without Terry Murray, who was fired from the head coaching position on Monday. They gave interim coach John Stevens his first win Thursday night against Columbus, snapping a five-game losing streak.

The Wings on the other hand, managed to let a potential four-game win streak get awat from them Thursday night in Nashville. Expect them to be looking for a chance to r...

Howl-o-Ween Game Day: Los Angeles Kings @ Phoenix Coyotes

Yesterday the Phoenix Coyotes acquired centre Cal O’Reilly from the Nashville Predators for a fourth-round pick in 2012. The trade is conditional upon him passing a physical, but it's likely he will make his debut Wednesday as the Coyotes face the Avalanche.

The trade comes in the middle of lots of buzz surrounding the status of another centre, Kyle Turris, and his prolonged holdout that Phoenix general manager Don Maloney has stated publicly will not end in a trade.  Though the hopeful among Coyotes' camp are thinking maybe this trade will cause some movement in that department.

The Los Angeles Kings are back at Jobing.com Arena tonight, after hav...

Game Day: Los Angeles Kings @ Phoenix Coyotes

In the first of two meetings between the Kings and the Coyotes in October, one team is looking to build a three-game winning streak while the other is looking to rebound from a paltry showing that saw them outshot 35-16 against the Chicago Blackhawks and outscored 5-2.  In the "probably bad news" category, however, the last time the Coyotes managed this little offense was against Los Angeles.

The Kings have three consecutive wins against the Coyotes and are looking to come out of tonight's game in similar fashion, while Phoenix is trying to move past Tuesday's performance with the knowledge that a big win is needed tonight.

The Key to the Leafs' Season

On Monday, September 19th, the Toronto Maple Leafs will take to the ice for the first time in five months. The pre season opener will see the Leafs hosting the Ottawa Senators at the Air Canada Centre. Regardless of the result that night, Leaf fans will finally have that hockey itch scratched. With the summer of longing ending, it is being repeatedly said that if Reimer can continue his strong play, and if the second line plays as well as last season than the Leafs will reach the playoffs. As stated before, I believe the Leafs will end their playoff drought this season, and although the fans are right about Reimer and the second line, the key to the season is whether the special teams can...
