Isles Cool Off Flames

The New York Islanders’ two games earlier this week against the New York Rangers showed how important a great goaltender is.

The Islanders found out tonight what it’s like to have one in their goal.

Evgeni Nabokov, after giving up a goal on the 1st shot he faced, stopped the next 29 as the Islanders got a much needed win 3-1 over the Calgary Flames.

Islanders Cannot Let Flames Rise At The Coliseum

The Islanders take on the Calgary Flames tonight at the Coliseum. The Flames have a record of 18-15-4 and they take on the Islanders squad of 11-17-6.

The Islanders have announced that Evgeni Nabokov will be starting in net tonight and Nilsson would be backing him up. For the Flames, veteran goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff is between the pipes.

Where In The World Is Nino Niederreiter?

Twitter is a friendly application that many people use all over the world, whether it be for media purposes, to keep tabs on your favorite celebrities and athletes, to keep in touch with friends, or simply to say every little thing that shoots across your mind and at any point of the day.

Yesterday it was used by top Islanders prospect, Nino Niederreiter to answer a question that has been on the minds of almost every fan for the past three games. Although the tweet is no longer available as it has since been deleted, Niederreiter stated something along the lines of "I don't know" in regards to everyone's question: why has Nino Niederreiter been a healthy scratch?

Isles Dance With Devils

The New York Islanders play host to the New Jersey Devils this afternoon.  Islanders fans also hope that their team remembers to play hockey – something that has proved to be a difficult task in the last few games.

On Thanksgiving Eve, the Islanders dropped a heartbreaker to the Flyers in overtime, despite having gained a 3-1 lead.  An unfortunate bounce off the glass led to Danny Briere’s tying goal with 5 minutes to play in the third period.

The Islanders received a power play opportunity in overtime, but were unable to convert.  The Flyers quickly took advantage of the second chance they were given for the bonus point and ...

Where Have The Isles Gone?

Before I begin to talk about the current state of the New York Islanders, I have to ask where this team that is portrayed in this YouTube clip (courtesy of user bufmemaud) has gone?

"We saw it last year, I saw it. I saw the energy and the desperation in our game last year. The second half, we had the best record in the National Hockey League after the All-Star break. We were physical. We were tough to play against."

Nabokov's Injury May Increase His Value

Evgeni Nabokov was excellent in the Islanders 4-2 loss to the New York Rangers on Tuesday night and earned another start against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday, but he would never make it to the end as he left in the first period with a groin injury. Rick DiPietro came in relief for the win with fans left wondering how serious the injury would be to the team's most valuable trading chip. After being re-evaluated, Nabokov has been placed on the IR retroactive to November 17th.

Groin injuries can be tricky, especially for goaltenders. Although he is a forward, Nino Niederreiter missed near to a month of playing time after suffering a groin injury in the pre-season. ...

Battle For New York: Islanders vs Rangers

Preview:  The New York Islanders return home to Nassau Coliseum to take on their all-time rival, the New York Rangers.

The Islanders are coming off a western road trip which saw them give up a 3 goal lead in an overtime loss to the Avalanche, and a clinic put on by the Canucks in a loss to Vancouver.  The Islanders have played better hockey since changing up their offensive lines a few games ago, putting up more scoring chances more consistently.  However, they haven’t been able to translate the better play into wins.  A win tonight against the Rangers would mean even more than usual, as it would end a slide of losing efforts.

The Rangers ...

Comeau Gonna Go?

There's no secret as to who has possibly been the most disappointing Islander to date. Blake Comeau, who is looking to improve on a personal best 46-point season in 2011, is off to a terrible start with zero points in 11 games played along with a -5 rating.

Comeau has progressed nicely each year that he has been part of the New York Islanders organization. He had a three game stint with the big club back in 2007 before being sent back to the AHL, where he scored 43 points in 61 games with the Sound Tigers. But after that, Comeau would basically solidify himself as a member of the Islanders from then on out.

He put up 15 points in 2008, 25 points in 2009 and then 35 in...

Islanders Prepare for Avalanche

“And with the first overall selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, the New York Islanders are proud to select John Tavares.”

After months of speculation leading up to the 2009 NHL draft, the Islanders rewarded their fan base after a long and painful season by using the first pick to select the longtime #1 ranked player in the draft.  It has been said that when top prospects remain at the top of a draft board for a long period of time, analysts tend to search so hard for their flaws that when they finally find one, it becomes significantly over exaggerated.

So it was with Tavares, who was ranked at the top of his draft class since about age 14. ...

Time For A Brian Rolston Revival

Brian Rolston was added to the Islanders roster over the summer for two reasons: to help get to the cap floor with his $5 million contract and to add an experienced veteran that could contribute offensively.

Through the first ten games of the season, Rolston was struggling to produce in the form in which both he and the Islanders had hoped. He had dressed for nine of the first 10 games of the year, (missing one as his wife was expected to give birth) and only put up two assists while playing on the third line with Josh Bailey and Blake Comeau.

Comeau is still searching for his first point of the year and Bailey picked up an assist in last night's win over the Capitals; his...
