CHI v. ANA - Game Preview

02/12/13

7:30pm CST

There was a lot of talk at the top of this season about the tough schedule the Chicago Blackhawks had ahead of them with 10 of their first 12 games on the road.  Recalling the hard luck the Hawks faced away from home last season still...

Free Agency 2012: Zach Parise and Ryan Suter Both Sign With Minnesota Wild

The two biggest free agents on the market this summer have made their decision, and their decision is Minnesota.

It was announced early Tuesday afternoon that both Zach Parise and Ryan Suter have agreed to terms with the Minnesota Wild, both for 13-year, $98 million deals.

Parise, the former captain of the New Jersey Devils, scored 404 points in 502 games over seven seasons with the Devils. After suffering from a season-ending injury last season, he had a successful comeback season, with 69 points in 82 games. He led his team to Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals, where they ultimately lost to the Los Angeles Kings.

Bobby Ryan Rumors: Philadelphia Flyers Upping Their Efforts for Ryan, According to Report

The Philadelphia Flyers are allegedly upping their efforts to acquire Bobby Ryan from the Anaheim Ducks in a trade, according to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period magazine.

Pagnotta tweeted the information early Tuesday evening.

The Isles Were Busy, And Might Not Be Done

The New York Islanders were very active yesterday, acquiring three new players on the open market on the first day of NHL Free Agency. Forward Brad Boyes was signed to a one-year, $1 million deal and was soon followed by defenseman Matt Carkner's three-year contract worth $4.5 million.

Not long after these signings, former Islanders forward P.A. Parenteau inked a four-year, $16 million deal with the Colorado Avalance. Although many on twitter felt that the Isles could have easily afforded Parenteau's new contract, it still made plenty of sense to let him go. Four years for a 29 year old hockey player that only had one season worthy of top line honors and only two full seasons of NHL experience is a lot to commit too. In addition, Matt Moulson presently makes less per year than Parenteau's new contract. Moulson has been a consistent thirty goal scorer since joining the Islanders and has maintained chemistry with his long-time buddy, John Tavares. GM Garth Snow must have seen the risks in possibly off-setting the locker room if he showed that he felt Parenteau was more deserving a higher salary to go along with the other risk factors involved in that contract. With that being said, I wish Parenteau the best of luck and will look forward to seeing him return to Coliseum ice.

But in every difficulty lies an opportunity, and that is what Brad Boyes has been given.

Islanders First Line: Matt Moulson, John Tavares and ?

Today PA Parenteau officially become an unrestricted free agent for all 30 teams, including the Islanders, to try and sign. I think you can assume that Parenteau will go wherever he gets the biggest contract and if the past, under Garth Snow, has shown us anything, Parenteau has played his final game in orange and blue.

Lets be honest the Islanders aren’t going to be able to get a top-6 forward in this free agent class and even though many Islanders fans would like to see Snow make a run at Bobby Ryan, it’s probably not going to happen. Snow is on the right track with drafting, grooming players and signing role players in free agency. So Parenteau’s successor on the first line will come from within the organization, the question is who will it be?

Target Acquired: Bobby Ryan

Bob McKenzie of TSN has reported via Twitter that "Bobby Ryan is 'available' again." Acquiring Ryan would immediately strengthen Detroit's offensive core and bring the size necessary to compete in the contemporary NHL.

One, Two, Three, Triple Deke - Ducks 4 Isles 2

The Ducks top line of Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, and Bobby Ryan had a coming out party Friday Night.

Unfortunately, it was at the New York Islanders expense.

Bobby Ryan had two goals and Ryan Getzlaf scored the go-ahead goal, his first in over a month, as the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Islanders 4-2.

Ryan started the scoring at 14:18 of the second period only seconds after their first power play of the game ended. Matt Martin answered back under two minutes later tapping home a rebound to tie the game at one. It was his fifth goal of the season, tying his career high.

Kings Can Only Go Up From Here

Yes, it’s a worn-out cliché, but the Los Angeles Kings certainly didn’t picture their season to be playing out the way it has thus far. No proud franchise wants to be sitting in third place within their division a little more than a quarter of the way through the season. At 13-10-4 through 27 games, it would be far from an understatement to say that these Kings have underachieved.

Success is never a guarantee, even when seemingly all the right pieces are in all the right places. Professional teams from all over the world with far higher expectations (and consequently) far more media exposure have set the bar disappointing fans, players and owners alike. And let’s ...

Game Day: Anaheim Ducks @ Phoenix Coyotes

The contract saga between Kyle Turris and the Phoenix Coyotes concluded yesterday in a two-year, $2.8M deal that will see Turris earn $1.2M this season and $1.6M the next.  Both sides spoke amicably of one another to the point where it's unclear if at some point later on this season, after enough on-ice exposure, Don Maloney will eventually grant Turris' wish of a trade. According to TSN, there are at least three teams currently interested (Ottawa, Calgary, Toronto).

Nevertheless, there is a game tonight.  The Anaheim Ducks roll into town after having won just one game out of their last ten, and the Coyotes dropped their last game against Washington.  Bot...
