The 2013 NHL season is no longer an 82 game marathon, but instead is a 48 game dash to the finish line.
Will teams that had multiple players skating in Europe fair better? Will veteran squads win because they will have fresh legs all season long? Only the next few months will tell.
Here are my Eastern Conference power rankings.
1. Pittsburgh Penguins – A healthyEvgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby will lead Pittsburgh deep into the Stanley Cup playoffs. The addition of veteran goalie Tomas Vokoun gives Coach Dan Bylsma a solid option if Marc-Andre Fleury falters.
She's the crying girl at the start of the video. Her name may or may not actually be Becky, but she seems like a Becky. Becky likes hockey and she has a big-time sad because she wants to watch the NHL this season, but the start of the hockey season is probably going to be pushed back because of a lockout, which starts at midnight on Saturday when the current collective bargaining agreement ends.
If you're any kind of NHL fan, Becky probably lives on the right side of your Facebook page, where ads live (it's nice to think that Becky and the girl in the "Meet Asian Singles!" ad hang out). Clicking on Becky's Facebook ad leads to a peti...
With a one-year deal worth $7 million, Alex Semin is headed to Raleigh to frustrate the living bejesus out of Carolina Hurricanes fans join Jordan Staal as part of a new-look offense for the Carolina Hurricanes.
It's a good deal for both parties. Semin, by hook (not the two-minute variety, with which Semin is very familiar) or crook gets his money and the team is only on the hook for one year. Not a bad deal for a boom-or-bust guy like Semin, even if he is coming off a bust season.
Now just where does that leave the Capitals?
They're not exactly up a creek with no paddle because it was pretty clear that Semin wanted to leave from season's end...
2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs - Eastern Conference SemifinalsNew York Rangers ( 1 ) vs. Washington Capitals ( 7 ) It's not surprising that the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals got to the second round, it's how the got here. The Rangers were taken to the bring of elimination against an eighth seeded Ottawa Senators team who, let's face it, probably had no business being in the playoffs in the first place. The Capitals were not favorites in their series against the Boston Bruins, and had their own troubles on their way to a 7th place finish in the regular season, but with the talent they had, and a ridiculous hot rookie goaltender in Braden Holtby they d...
For Caps goalie Braden Holtby, Thursday was just another day at the office.
That day at the office, by the way, included 44 saves on 45 shots by the Lloydminster, Saskatchewan native. It marked the second time in four games that Holtby made 40+ saves in the series, he stopped 43 of 44 shots in game two to steal a win in Boston.
Not bad for a guy with zero NHL playoff experience prior to his start in game one. Sure he had AHL playoff experience and some while playing for the Saskatoon Blades in the WHL, but not NHL playoff experience on the biggest stage in hockey.
The result: a 1.60 GAA (second among all goalies in playoffs...
The defending Stanley Cup Champions will have to first go through the Washington Capitals in this year's playoffs if they have any plans of repeating. Fortunately for them, the Capitals aren't exactly the most consistent team in the league right now. Frankly, they're probably lucky to find themselves in the playoffs after everything that's gone on in the nation's capital this year. Star players underperforming and creating mutinies against coaches, GMs unable to figure out what to do with their team, just a lot of headaches and problems for the Caps and their fans. The Bruins, on the other han...
It seems like so long ago when Detroit last won a game, an entire week and a half ago if you can believe it. The Wings last win was against Los Angeles on March 9th. It feels like so much longer though. The Wings did not win one game on their California road trip and now have lost their first game at home against the Washington Capitals. What do you think is keeping the Wings from playing like the Wings?
The Wings fell behind 3 to 0 in the first period and played catch up the rest of the game. There was a lot of talk before the game about how good of a player Alex Ovechkin is, which he proved early on in the game. Ovechkin scored on both power play...
For the Adirondack Phantoms, playing outdoors brought back some great childhood memories of playing with the fresh air in their face.
But for Shane Harper, his top memory will be how he won an outdoor hockey game for his team. For his career, it was "definitely number one for sure" in where the game winning goal ranked, leaving Harper with a hockey memory he will never forget.
Harper's goal gave the Phantoms a come-from-behind win against the Bears, 4-3, in the AHL Outdoor Classic. It capped off a wonderful week of outdoor hockey at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
