Blackhawks take first home playoff loss 6-2 vs Kings

If you were betting on the Blackhawks sweeping the Western Conference Finals, that's a bet that was definitely lost tonight, as Chicago had their first loss on home ice in the playoffs so far.

The Blackhawks owned possession for most of the first, but the Kings were dedicating themselves to defense and commanding face offs. It was a steady parade to the box for both teams throughout the first: the Kings took four, and the Blackhawks two. Nick Leddy got Chicago on the board first, a power play goal 14:16 into the game, off a feed from Duncan Keith.

Just after Drew Doughty's late-first-period penalty expired in the second, Ben Smith made it 2-0 for the Blackhawks 1:40 in...

Blackhawks drop game 4 to Wild; series tied 2-2

The Blackhawks continued to be stymied by the Wild in Minnesota.

While the Wild's style might not be exciting - choking defense that slows the other team - it's working. The Wild also have some young guns who have been showing why Minnesota made it into the playoffs, and why they'll be challenging things in the Central division in the years to come.

The first goal of the night came from Justin Fontaine, his first goal of the playoffs, to make it 1-0 Wild, 7:24 into the first. It would take most of the first period, but Patrick Sharp got the Blackhawks on the board with 39 seconds left in the first period with a five-hole goal.

An Overlooked Issue from Round 1

There were a lot of things to like in the Hawks 5-1 win against the St. Louis Blues on Sunday afternoon.  The stars produced, the penalty kill was stellar, and though it was a lot closer than it looked, the Hawks held on and sent the Blues packing in the first round.

But lost amidst the emotional high that comes with winning a playoff series was one seemingly minor lineup change that could have major impacts on the Hawks in later playoff games that wasn't he...

In defense of Jeremy Morin

Jeremy Morin has followed a similar career path as Brandon Pirri, bouncing between the minors and big league club and never really sticking or making consistent contributions.  Pirri was traded to Florida, and many thought Morin would be the next out of Rockford. Instead, he’s making his case for the playoffs, and it’s a good one.  After scoring four goals in the last five games, Morin was spotted at Tuesday’s practice with a white practice jersey on- which means he’s a ‘5th line guy’ or healthy scratch.  This should not happen.

Hawks down Stars on 'Teuvo Tuesday'

After a flat performance on Sunday against the Predators, the Hawks came out with a purpose and put away a 4-2 win against a Dallas Stars team desperate for points as the playoff race continues.  Corey Crawford was sharp in the win with 25 saves.

The buzz around the UC was that Teuvo Teravainen would be making his NHL debut.  He would get a cheer from the crowd on his first shift, and while he didn’t earn any points in his debut, he made a c...

Blackhawks steamroll Blue Jackets 6-1

The last time that the Blackhawks and Blue Jackets played each other, the two were Central division rivals. But with realignment, Columbus moved to the Eastern Conference, and the two teams faced each other for the first time this season on Thursday night at the United Center.

There's no reason to think that the Blue Jackets can't make the playoffs. They have been bouncing in and out of wild card contention all season. Since New Year's, Columbus has gone 15-6-1, including an 8-game win streak (January 6-23).

But on Thursday night in Chicago, the Blackhawks beat them solidly, 6-1. The home team dominated in just about every stat that mattered: outshooting ...

Hawks fall to Jets 3-1

In their last home game til March 4th a familiar recent script was played out again. The Hawks dominate forty minutes only to fade in the third period and lose the game. Unfortunately this time they could not even push the Winnipeg Jets to overtime or a shoot out.

There is no question the Hawks look tired and maybe a little bored. The Olympic break cannot get here quick enough or maybe road life will help to rejuvenate the struggling Hawks.

The lone Hawks tally came in the first period from Brandon Bollig. He was wrapping around the Jets’ net and as he was falling down somehow shot the puck and squeezed it past the Jets’ goalie Al Montoya and the near post.

Hawks encountering problems in new year

The honeymoon is officially over for the Chicago Blackhawks.

It was great while it lasted, but gone are the days when the Hawks could score 6 goals or more every night, as they did in three straight games in December. As Chicago approaches the Olympic break just over halfway through the season, they’re starting to look like a mediocre hockey club at best. A delayed Stanley Cup hangover apparently has struck, and created problems that have been made particularly apparent in January:

Hawks bounce back, sweep season series with Edmonton

In their second game in two nights, the Hawks bounced back from a tough 2-1 OT loss against Montreal to win their third game against the Oilers to sweet the season series 5-3.  Antti Raanta made 18 saves to improve to 12-1-3, and the Hawks scored five goals on 41 shots, including a power play goal.

The Oilers, fresh off a come-from-behind victory against the Penguins, played well in the beginning...

Blackhawks drop game vs Rangers in regulation, 3-2

Early in the season, the Blackhawks picked up several wins where their best game wasn't there for the full sixty minutes, but they still managed to win the game. It might have hinted of a Cup hangover, but as the season rolled on, it was clear that the team didn't have any such thing - just their ongoing tendency to play some very sloppy periods within otherwise solid games.

Tonight versus the Rangers was one of those nights. The Blackhawks let themselves get outplayed in the first, and found themselves down 2-0 less than ten minutes into the game. Brad Richards opened the scoring with an even-strength goal; Mats Zuccarello put in a power play goal next off a pair of od...
