2012-13 Eastern Conference Prediction

The NHL is still in the midst of a lockout due to a CBA dispute between the NHL and the NHLPA. There have been rumors that a season could start around the beginning of December, TCL's Shane Blackburn provides a preview of the Eastern Conference should the lockout end. (Photo Credit: Wikipedia)

Sestito, Shelley are irrelevant to the Flyers

The one-trick pony enforcer is dying in today's NHL.

No longer is it worth having a guy on the team who only fights and skates five minutes of ice time per game. Instead, the guys who are willing to drop the gloves also have a clue as to what to do with a hockey stick and when the puck is on it.

That leaves Jody Shelley and Tom Sestito practically irrelevant on the Flyers and their pursuit of a successful season.

On and off, the two have been in the line up for the Flyers. And in the rarest, and most unfortunate occasions, the two goons were in the line up together for five times this season. In those five times, the Flyers are 1-3-1.

Battle For New York: Islanders vs Rangers

Preview:  The New York Islanders return home to Nassau Coliseum to take on their all-time rival, the New York Rangers.

The Islanders are coming off a western road trip which saw them give up a 3 goal lead in an overtime loss to the Avalanche, and a clinic put on by the Canucks in a loss to Vancouver.  The Islanders have played better hockey since changing up their offensive lines a few games ago, putting up more scoring chances more consistently.  However, they haven’t been able to translate the better play into wins.  A win tonight against the Rangers would mean even more than usual, as it would end a slide of losing efforts.

The Rangers ...

Rangers Rolling

A fine week of hockey for the Rangers is in the books after Friday's throttling of the Carolina Hurricanes at MSG. A four goal third period broke open what had been a tightly contested game through two periods and led the Blue Shirts to their sixth straight win. Brad Richards, Ryan Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky each finished with a goal and an assist for the home team.

Sean Avery got the ball rolling with his first goal of the year in the first period on a breakaway. Jeff Woywitka chipped the puck up the ice and past a Hurricanes defender springing Avery on the break. Avery shielded the puck from another Hurricanes defender befor elevating the puck over Cam Ward's left shoul...

Big Hit, Early Ugliness Leads to Habs Loss in New York

If you were to take a quick glance at the box score from tonight's tilt at Madison Square Garden, you would probably have to assume that the New York Rangers had their way with the Montreal Canadiens. 5-3, heavy advantage in powerplays, faceoffs,  and (especially early) in shots, everything on paper screamed out that this was the Rangers' game.

But of course, stats can sometimes be misleading. You see, despite a relatively horrendous first period, for many reasons, the Montreal Canadiens may have actually been the better team on the ice tonight.

The chances definitely went in the Canadiens' favor, as did the hits and the sho...

Rangers Through Three

Usually I like to be as original and creative as possible both when naming and deciding on a theme for a blog post. Sometimes though it is just better to keep it simple. That's the case here.

I can't tell you how many "good, bad and ugly" style posts I've read before but that is the perfect theme for today's blog.

I waited until today to post anything on the Rangers start since the first two "regular season" games in Europe felt more like an extension of the exhibition season than the stat of the regular one. Now the club is back in North America and have a game under their belts in the States. So, let's do a little good, bad and u...

Dubi, Dubi, Done

The New York Rangers took care of what looked to be their most challenging item of business this summer; signing F Brandon Dubinsky to a long-term deal ahead of his arbitration hearing. Well, mission accomplished as the Blueshirts and Dubinsky agreed to a four-year deal worth a total of $16.8 million. In actuality, the arbitration hearing scheduled for 9:00 AM Thursday was postponed because both parties felt they were close to an agreement. It was imperative the deal get done without an arbitration hearing being held and that's exactly what happened.

Why is arbitration such a bad thing, anyway? In order to convince the arbitrator the player is only worth the salary figure the te...

Rangers RFA's

Even though signing Brad Richards was summer priority number one and he is officially signed, sealed and delivered to Manhattan, the Rangers still have a lot of work to do in preparation for the start of the 2011-2012 regular campaign. With five key RFA's, four of whom filed for arbitration, Slats still has some work to do before heading off on his annual summer vacation.

Many Rangers fans were nervous about the RFA's and rightfully so. Just two years ago Brandon Dubinsky was embroiled in a contentious negotiation with the club and his situation was not resolved until after the start of training camp. Coach Tortorella was displeased and went public with his unhappiness. Give...
