Eastern Conference Semi Final Update; Penguins Edition

It took two overtimes and three simple defensive breakdowns to end a pivotal game three in the Penguins and Senators round two playoff series. It was dramatic, nerve racking, and punishing. The nasty play and overall demeanor developing in this series is better than advertised.

The tone coming into the series was mostly anticipation of brutal play. With hopes that the polarizing penguins club could be witnessed getting knocked around by a bigger Ottawa defensive core. This did not happen to the extent in which many were hoping, I see you Philly, but the physicality shown in this series dwarfs the slow tone of the only other eastern conference series.

When a team finds success in the NHL on a consistent basis, it is very difficult for GM’s to tinker with said success in order to find greater success. It is the easiest explanation as to how the NHL has witnessed such playoff parity. In the modern cap era it has become even more difficult to place a team on the ice that has a continued shot at a championship. It was Rival Night on NBC, and the Flyers and Penguins delivered.

Jakub Voracek's hat trick goal proved to be the game-winner in a wild 6-5 victory for the Flyers at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh. The game featured lead changes and blown leads,

The opening 10 minutes of the first period looked to be damning for the Flyers.

Playing completely flat-footed against a faster team almost spelled their early demise. Pittsburgh scored two quick goals, and possibly a third, jumping out to a 2-0 lead and 12-2 shot advantage.

The 23 man roster has been set as the Penguins head into the 2013 season. The interesting aspect of the current roster was Coach Dan Bylsma’s selection of eight defensemen.

With the roster of defensemen set at eight, the Penguins had to place Brian Straight on waivers. It is surfacing now that Strait was claimed off of waivers by the New York Islanders. While a good pick up for the Isles, it is a difficult loss of depth for the Penguins.

It is expected that both Robert Bortuzzo and Ben Lovejoy will be the 7th and 8th defensemen in the rotation, giving highly touted prospect Simon Despres a spot among the Penguins top 4 pairing. It is expect as well that...

It was a landmark trade that shipped one star center in Jordan Staal to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a draft pick, prospect, and new third line center Brandon Sutter.

Sutter was the key piece to this deal as Pittsburgh needed another center to replace Staal’s role. Unfortunately, many fans are looking at this as if Sutter will be replacing Staal. But, that's just not possible.

Jordan Staal played 431 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins tallying a total of 120 goals (.28PPG) and 128 assists. His 13 shorthanded goals in his career make him one of the strongest and deadliest penalty killers in the game.

There was a lot going on Friday night and Saturday in Pittsburgh. The Penguins hosted the draft, they made the trade of the draft, and they selected twice on Friday. It was an extremely busy day, so it now finally sinks in that the Penguins really made a few huge moves on Friday.

On Staal – The 6’4 225lb center who was drafted second overall in 2006 was one of, if not the most, underrated center in the NHL. Staal has only truly played with top six talent once in his career consistently and he scored 29 goals.
