Blues vs. Sharks - Playoff Preview

Finally! After a long 82 game schedule the Blues can really get down to business. Champions are not made in the regular season, but are made through the playoffs. This time around, this St. Louis Blues team could make a strong run. They have the home ice set for at least the first two rounds, and looking at their record at home they could not ask for anything better coming into their first playoff game against the San Jose Sharks on Thursday.

But is home ice enough for these youthful Blues to take down a perennial Western Conference powerhouse in the Sharks? This preview should be able to sort all those questions out and more.

Record Setting Blues Keep on Impressing

Well it has been that kind of fairy tale year for the St. Louis Blues and their faithful fans, something we have all been waiting for, as the Blues ride right back to the top of the NHL standings (don't want to jinx it, but this fan thinks they will comfortably stay there). After last nights win against central division foes, the Nashville Predators, the Blues climbed to the top of the league, two points ahead of the East leading New York Rangers, who still sit with a game in hand however.

A defensive and goaltending battle for the ages went down to the wire Thursday night at the Staples Center as the Los Angeles Kings earned a 1-0 shootout victory over the Western Conference-leading St. Louis Blues.

The only three “goals” of the evening, courtesy of Jeff Carter, Mike Richards and T.J. Oshie, came in the shootout. L.A.’s Jonathan Quick was rewarded with the win thanks to his thirty-five save effort—it was also the goaltender’s eighth shutout of the season...

The Blues came out of Ottawa tonight with exactly what they needed. A win, a 3 – 1 win. After losing their previous road game in Nashville, tonight’s game was of utmost importance. As we discussed before, the games remaining on the blues schedule are lopsided when it comes to home games and away games, with many being played away from the friendly confines of the Scottrade Center.

Looking back to the start of the season, if you were to ask any hockey expert who the starting goalie of the St. Louis Blues would be, they would not have said Brian Elliot. If you asked any of those same experts whose numbers which goaltender would be represented by a 1.69 G.A.A, a .938 save percentage and five shutouts at the All-Star break, they would not have guessed Brian Elliot. It's Time To Step It Up

The Sharks are too talented of a team to play the way they did in back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday. After laying a huge egg against the Ducks, losing 1-0, the Sharks headed back home to play the Blues. Hoping for a better effort, the Sharks came out fairly flat, but did carry a 2-1 lead into the 3rd period. Unfortunately, they gave up 3 goals (one empty netter) in the final period (deja-vu?) and lost 4-2. It isn't like this team to play two games and not pull out at least one point, and this kind of play cannot continue. The western conference, and the Pacific Division even more so, is too competitive to only win one game out of three.  The worst part of these losses is that ...
