GM's Job Done, Players and Coaches Must Produce

By Scott Lowe

Someone, not sure who, wrote in this space yesterday that the Washington Capitals would most likely sit back and let the Free Agent Frenzy play out, waiting for the day’s losers to approach them with ridiculous trade offers they couldn’t refuse. Okay, maybe that scenario didn’t quite pan out.

Instead, while the Caps’ venture into the free agent wilderness could not be considered as much of a frenzied approach as some teams (ahem, Buffalo and Florida), Washington turned out to be one of the more active teams. And by all accounts, General Manager George McPhee did a great job filling holes and continuing to mold his club into a tougher and m...

Avs Trade for Varlamov: Over Payment?

Avs Gamble Big!

After it looked like it was all but sure the Avs would get Vokoun, the team shocks the hockey nation and trades and first and a second/third next year for the rights to negotiate Semyon Varlamov.  This move has to scream the rebuild is over because otherwise that first rounder could be a lottery pick in a deep draft next year.

The biggest question it has raised is what will happen to Vokoun now, where really no team is looking for a starter still.  My bet is it is off to Europe for Tomas.  I like Varly and the acquisition, however the amount the Avs gave up for a guy who alre...

Vokoun all but assured

Vokoun All But Assured to be in an Avs Uni Next Year

Yesterday, the Avs put in Qualifiying offers on players, and also let some go.  It was already stated Peter Budaj would not be resigned, however the Avs also did not qualify RFA Brian Elliott.  This means that as of right now the Avs have absolutely no goaltenders on their roster.  To add to that, the Avs also have around $20 mill they have to spend just to get to the cap floor.  This means that Avs will be forced to be big spenders come Friday.  This all but assures the Avs will put a serious offer on Tomas Vokoun, who is ranked as the number one FA goalie available. &n...

Great draft for Avs include two top prospects and some potential sleepers

Avs draft big!

The Colorado Avalanche had an injury filled season that ended with them finishing with the second worst record in the NHL.  However, the light at the end of the tunnel occurred at the draft where the Avs had two top 15 picks as well as the number 2 pick.  Giving the Avs two top 5 picks in the last three years as well as a few other good draft picks.  You have to say the rebuild is going quick and we could see the Avs climb back to the top with their recent player additions.  This years draft will be looked back on as a huge part of a turn around if it happens soon.

With the number 2 pick the Avs sele...

Stastny's days over? Could be tomorrow! Rumors

Well with all the huge trades that have happened today, the Avs haven't stayed out of the game. I am hearing rumors left and right that Stastny is in play to several teams. The two biggest that are constantly being stated are Toronto and now Los Angeles. After the Richards deal, L.A. could try and land Stastny for Bernier and some add ons. Right now the Avs number one priority is a goalie, so there definitely could be a move done. The other big item in play for the Avs is the number 11 pick. The Avs don't have a huge need for the number 11 pick and it may be traded to either L.A. or even Vancouver for Schneider. It will be extremely interesting the next 24 hours for the league especia...

Avs Captain Adam Foote Announces his retirement

Avs Adam Foote is calling an end to his 20 year career The Avs will be losing another captain this week, as Adam Foote will officially announce his retirement on Friday morning. No one knows if he might still play Sunday, but Foote has battled a leg injury all year, an injury that has most recently kept him out of the lineup the last ten games. Footer is the last remaining Nordique on the roster, and even though he left for two years with Columbus, he returned to the team that drafted him and was somewhat effective. It seemed that the new rules after the lockout really changed who Foote was as a player. Before, he was always the toughest battler in front on the net and in the corn...

Another Loss closer to a top pick!

Landeskog is quickly becoming a reality Well a game in which the Avs were up 2-0 quickly became a 4-2 loss against the newly crowned division champs Vancouver Canucks. It wasn't a bad game by the Avs, and it wasn't a great game by the Canucks. It was a great game by the Sedins. The Sedin twins won that game and the division for the Canucks, and boy are they amazing! It's no wonder they are both top 5 in scoring. Elliott had a pretty good night, and both Duchene and Johnson played their hearts out and it got them both a goal. This Avalanche team has the pieces, they just aren't all healthy right now. The one good thing is an unlucky season for a decent upcoming team, will lead the...

Avs sign first rounder Hishon...Help me win a contest please!

Avs first rounder Joey Hishon The Avs signed last years first rounder Joey Hishon to a contract yesterday, however it is looking like he will not play with the team this year. Hishon could be a big help for the team next year after a successful year he is having with the Owen Sound. I look forward to seeing some of the prospects develop and bring this franchise back to the top. CONTEST! PLEASE HELP ME GET VOTES! I am currently in a goalie mask design contest on Facebook, if you have a Facebook, please go and vote for my design. All you have to do is allow the application and push vote, that's it. Just try and do it real quick each day and share it with others. I would be...

who will be the Avs choice in the draft?

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is right now projected number one Well the Avs are almost guaranteed a top 5 pick, barring some miraculous run that gets them out of that spot, but also the Avs free fall may land them with the number one pick. Especially seeing as the Avs play the last place Oilers 2 more times, and well they already lost to them 5-2 both games. I thought I would take a look at the top 5 projected pick and see what would be the best pick for the Avs. Now you have to look at it like this; do the Avs need to replace Stewy, or after injuries are we fine up front. With all the smaller d prospects, should the Avs go after a true D-man to pair or help Johnson out. Or do the Avs just ...

Avs fall yet again... but I'm fine with it...

Avs fall again to Preds 4-2 Well I haven't written a lot lately, because well there hasn't been much to write. The Avs continue their nose dive to the bottom of the standings and the reasons behind it are the same as they have been since it started. As a fan I want them to win, but I have not come to grips with being ok with the losses. The teams below the Avs are playing well and before we know it the Avs could have the number one pick in the draft. Playoffs are out of the question now and so the only thing to play for is that pick. Currently the Avs have added a few more players to the injury list including Paul Stastny and Milan Hejduk. So the scoring will more than likely comp...
