Bertuzzi Prevails in Shootout Win

Todd Bertuzzi scored the only goal in the shootout Thursday, lifting the Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena, Detroit's fifth consecutive win.

Five of the Red Wings' past six wins have come in a shootout or overtime. They are 4-0 in shootouts, 3-1 in overtime. And those extra points are crucial. With 63 points, Detroit has moved into first place in the overall standings. Bertuzzi, with his team's third opportunity in the shootout, beat Mike Smith with a nifty spin move and backhand shot, after Jimmy Howard had stopped three Phoenix attempts.

Hudler, Conklin 'Star' in Shootout Win

Jiri Hudler scored the tying goal in regulation and added the only marker in the shootout as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Dallas Stars 3-2 last night in Texas.

Ty Conklin stopped all three Dallas shooters to earn the victory in the battle of the back-up goaltenders. Richard Bachman started for the Stars and gave up an early goal from Tomas Holmstrom. Jan Mursak's hard work allowed him to send a pass into the low slot and Holmstrom teed up a cannon from the hashmarks that beat Bachman.

The Stars scored twice on some garbage Holmstrom-like goals by Brendan Morrow and Loui Eriksson.

If there is anything that resembles what a roller coaster ride is, today's matinee game between the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings certainly takes the cake.

Detroit started strong but let the Hawks back into the game before Todd Bertuzzi scored his second goal of the game in overtime to seal a 3-2 win; Detroit's 14th consecutive home victory, which ties the team record.

The Red Wings started the game with a 10-0 shot advantage and turned the momentum into a 2-0 lead at the first intermission. Tomas Holmstrom scored a powerplay goal on a deflection and Bertuzzi converted a breakaway pass from Pavel Datsyuk.

The Detroit Red Wings will send two players to the NHL All Star Game in Ottawa. Pavel Datsyuk and Jimmy Howard were both chosen to play, Datsyuk for his turn around season and dynamite skill set and Howard for his amazingly All-Star-like play this season.

When hearing of the exclusion of captain Nicklas Lidstrom, I was outraged. I then heard that he asked Brendan Shanahan not to play, and to be honest, good for him. He knows he should be there, but at 41 years old he isn't getting any younger. A little break will benefit him and in turn the Red Wings. The All Star game isn't really a defenceman's game anyway.

Jimmy Howard has 99 wins in his young career, but tonight he won't get a chance to get to triple digits. Reports have Ty Conklin making his second consecutive start for the Red Wings tonight against the New York Islanders.

Conklin stole the show in a 3-2 overtime win against the Blackhawks in Chicago. He stopped Jimmy Hayes on a penalty shot after allowing two early goals and shut the door the rest of the way, paving the road for Pavel Datsyuk's overtime winner.

When TCL Predators writer Greg Duley stated that the Red Wings would come back from their 4-3 loss to Nashville with a better effort, he wasn't kidding.

The Wings blasted the Los Angeles Kings 8-2 in a game where they were outshot. The scoring basically came from the bottom two lines. Cory Emmerton had two goals as did Drew Miller. Niklas Kronwall, Brad Stuart, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg also scored for the Red Wings and Dan Cleary had three assists. Jimmy Howard picked up his 19th win of the year.

Detroit has won 10 straight games at Joe Louis Arena.

In my world, the Detroit Red Wings won tonight by a score of 3-2 over the Nashville Predators. In real life, NOT TRUE.

Shea Weber scored twice in the last two minutes of the game and Nashville somehow won 4-3. They were out-shot, out-chanced and out-classed until the last two minutes and the Wings don't get a single point for it. That's what happens when you let your foot off the gas pedal.

So here's how this is going to work; I'm going to write an honest game review until the 3-2 mark, and then it's rant time. Fair enough? Here we go.

The Detroit Red Wings are rolling through this season, on pace for yet another 100+ point season and a 21st consecutive playoff appearance. While they already have a good team in front of them, these five changes could make them into an even better one, and all of them are plausible situations.

1. TRADE FOR A GOAL SCORER

There are not a lot of pure goal scorers on the Wings. Henrik Zetterberg hasn't been a huge threat and Pavel Datsyuk is basically a great set-up man. Johan Franzen is the closest thing to it, but he is inconsistent. A player like Zach Parise is someone who can score every night and would benefit from a move to Detroit. Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby will not play Tuesday against the Detroit Red Wings due to a recurrence of concussion-like symptoms.

Crosby, who missed nearly ten months because of a concussion, returned a few weeks ago and was playing excellent hockey, until a couple of collisions made the Penguins take him out of the line-up as a precaution for two games, but now that has changed to an indefinite time frame.
