Winning Streak Finally Comes to a Halt Against Montréal

Detroit’s winning streak ends at 7 tonight when the Wings fall short in a 7 to 2 loss against the Montréal Canadiens. Was it because the Wings were lacking their trusty captain Nicklas Lidstrӧm? You decide.

First Period: It took about five minutes for a point to get on the scoreboard and that point was not a Red Wings point as hoped for. Montréal had the first point with a goal by Bourque. Five minutes later, Emelin scores his first goal and gives Montréal a 2 to 0 lead over the Wings. Within the last ten minutes of the first period, Montréal’s Desharnais and Plekanec both scored. The unfortunate thing about this game - Nicklas Lidstrom did not play at the Bell Centre. The stalwart on defense for the Red Winds missed only his 31st game in 21 years. Unfortunate that in this unbalanced schedule he missed the only time he was to play in Montreal in a couple of seasons. Campoli and Nokelainen were the scratches for the hometown heroes on this game.

The first period began with the home side showing speed and intensity - something that has been sorely lacking on a lot of the games in the first half of this season. First game in the Rene Bourque era in a rare Sunday evening game in Montreal. The scratches for the evening are Petteri Nokelainen and Chris Campoli. The Habs went with seven defensemen and eleven forwards once again. Peter Budaj started against the number one team in the eastern conference.

First period started with the Habs putting on some pressure on the Rangers and Max Pacioretty scored with assists going to Erik Cole and David Desharnais. With the Habs leading in the game and having territorial advantage at five minutes Stu Bickle and Travis Moen squared off in a staged fight off a face off in the Rangers zone. Overtime is becoming a friend to the Habs on this road trip. Two games two overtime victories against western conference teams. Peter Budaj, playing in his second game of the season was sensational stopping 25 of the 26 shots he faced in a fast paced entertaining game. 

The Nashville Predators played the 1000th game in their history. Barry Trotz also was coaching on this mile-stone night - only the fourth man in the history of the NHL to coach 1000 games with the same team. The others are Al Arbour - Islanders, Lindy Ruff (Sabres), Billy Reah (Blackhawks).

It didn’t take long for Pierre Gauthier to listen to fans and the media.  Something needed to be done.  Something needed to change.  Someone needed to be held accountable for the start:  the worst start in the franchise’s history. 

So 90 minutes before the game Gauthier fired assistant coach Perry Pearn.  Pearn and coach Martin go back a long way but that relationship ended tonight and that change led to the Canadiens walking over the Flyers tonight.  That is what Gauthier would want everyone to believe!
