Flyers Re-Sign RFA Defenseman Brandon Manning

According to Flyers Insider Anthony SanFilippo, the Philadelphia Flyers have signed 23-year-old defenseman Brandon Manning to a one year, two-way contract. Financial terms were not immediately available.

Timonen Signing an Unavoidable Necessity

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they extended Kimmo Timonen's contract by one year at a cap hit of $6 million. Many may not be happy about it, but the Flyers had to do it. It's really as simple as that.

What else were they going to do? If they lost Timonen, arguably their best defenseman and most capable puck mover, where would this team be in the standings? They most certainly would not be a playoff team. The roster only shows one other capable puck moving defenseman in Braydon Coburn.

Grossman trade leaves room for future moves

It was the first step in the right direction.

Much of the talk since the start of December has revolved around the Flyers needing to add a defenseman to improve their standing as a contender in the Eastern Conference.

While Grossman is a great addition considering the price (two draft picks), he isn’t a game changer. This move was to shore up the defense, not solidify it.

With the deadline just ten days away, the Flyers still have plenty of time to continue to tweak their roster.
