Game Preview: Flames vs Edmonton Oilers

The Battle of Alberta is re-ignited tonight with the Flames heading up north to meet their provincial rivals, the Edmonton Oilers. They are connected by the same highway but that is about the only thing these two have in common with each team heading in opposite directions in the standings. The Oilers currently sit in a tie for 10th, one point out of the playoffs, while the Flames sit 14th, just two points ahead of the 30th place Florida Panthers.

Blackhawks Fall to Visiting Oilers 6-5 for their Second Regulation Loss of the Season

The Chicago Blackhawks (21-2-3) suffered their second consecutive regulation loss Sunday night in a 6-5 barnburner against the visiting Edmonton Oilers (9-11-5), trading in their 24 game points streak for a 2 game pointless streak. After looking sluggish for most of their 6-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche just two days prior, the Blackhawks continued to appear as though they were skating through quicksand, surrendering four first period goals to a young Edmonton squad that had lost five straight games entering the night’s contest. The Oilers, having been shutout in their previous two outings, scored their first goal in nearly 168 minutes just 2:24 into the opening frame on S...

Edmonton Erases Flyers in Expletive Effort

After the Philadelphia Flyers 2-0 loss in Edmonton Thursday night, Coach Peter Laviolette had a choice word to describe the second period.

“Horses--t.”

That’s what Laviolette told reporters, and he may have been too kind in his assessment.

Looking for their first win in Edmonton in 11 years, the Flyers hit the ice with purpose. They outshot the Oilers 14-9, had two power play opportunities, and controlled play.

Without the all-important first goal, both teams headed to the locker rooms in a 0-0 tie. In the second, the horses--t began.

Quite simply, with the game up for grabs the Oilers decided they were going to take it. Philadelphia seemed to have decided they would let Edmonton have their way.

The home team outshot the Flyers 15-6 in the stanza and scored the game’s only two goals. Both came in the fallout of Philadelphia’s poor play in the defensive zone.

Isles Strike Oil With 4-1 Win Over Edmonton

The Islanders played host this afternoon to the Edmonton Oilers on Ken Morrow night, as the former Isles defenseman was being inducted into the Islanders Hall of Fame. The last player to be inducted a little over a month ago was the team's first captain, Ed Westfall. The home team would go on to lose 6-0 that night to the Boston Bruins. But today Ken Morrow's name would ring with pride as the Islanders would go on to win 4-1 and establish a two-game winning streak.

The first period saw the Isles take a 1-0 lead on the power play as Ben Eager was serving a roughing penalty. And get used to that statement, because Eager made himself right at home in the shameful sin bin with a total of 16 PIMs on the day, not one of them from a fighting major. PA Parenteau would drag the puck through the slot and have it taken away from him, only to land perfectly on John Tavares' stick. With Devan Dubnyk down and out of position after the puck changed directions, Tavares was able to bury the puck with ease. Matt Moulson had the secondary assist.

The Oilers would tie the game later in the period after a fluky shot made it's way past Evgeni Nabokov. Nino Niederreiter was caught out of position, forcing him to dive stick first in order to block the shot from the point. He got a piece of it, allowing the puck to change directions and pinball it's way through the crease. Sam Gagner was credited with the goal with the assists going to Corey Potter and former Islander Andy Sutton.
