Kings Win First Stanley Cup in Franchise History

For the first time in franchise history, the Los Angeles Kings are Stanley Cup Champions. They capped off the series with an impressive 6-1 win over the New Jersey Devils Monday night in at the Staples Center in the company of twenty thousand of the clubs most fervent supporters.

The game’s most significant turn came in the first period with a five-minute major penalty assessed to New Jersey’s Steve Bernier for boarding Rob Scuderi. He was most likely retaliating for a non-call on a hit by Jarrett Stoll on Stephen Gionta, but his actions were solely responsible...

Feeling the Heat

It's amazing how quickly a series can turn. A week ago the Kings took game three and were one win away from a sweep and their first Stanley Cup, fast forward to today and things aren't as simple. Martin Brodeur has limited a high octane offense to two goals in the past two games and the Devils' offense has provided just enough spark to put pressure on Los Angeles.

The 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 1945 Detroit Red Wings have become relevant again. New Jersey joins select company by trailing in the Stanley Cup Finals 3-0 and becoming the third team to bring the series back 3-2. In both the 1942 and '45 series the team down 3-2 won game six to force a game sev...

Devils Stave Off Elimination, Defeat Kings 3-1

Hey, it's a series! And hits like this will continue. (Photo courtesy of Christian Peterson/Getty Images)

Despite the sheer dominance the Los Angeles Kings have shown over the previous three contests, one sort of expecting these road-weary Devils to show some fight at some point. Tonight they did. The teams combined for four goals, all of which were scored in the third period. The final tally was recorded by rookie Adam Henrique, who only has two series-clinching goals on his short resume prior to tonight’s game. His short-side snipe with less than five minutes to go sealed the victory and saved his team from a...

Kings One Win Away After Trouncing Devils 4-0

Yes, lightsabers. (Photo courtesy of Jeff Gross/Getty Images)

One more win. Drop those three words around any long-suffering Los Angeles Kings fan and you’re bound to see grown men reduced to tears. There’s also endless elation from fans of all ages as they shout, hoot, and holler until the sun rises the next morning. It promises to be a glorious moment when it happens, and it could be Wednesday. One more win.

That’s where the Kings sit this morning roughly nine hours after shutting out New Jersey by a score of 4-0 to take a three games to none series lead. Alec Martinez, Anze Kopitar, Jeff Carter...

Stanley Cup Preview: Game 2

"Gross." - Every Flyers/Rangers/Kings fan. "Cool!" - I guess everyone else. (Photo courtesy of Jim McIsaac/Getty Images)

Wednesday night’s Game 1 didn’t fall too far from the format of a typical series opener. The game play became rather ugly at times, due largely to both teams’ inexperience with one another and the acknowledgement that one small mistake could cost you the game. The scoring chances were minimal, save for, of course, the three combined goals and Mark Fayne’s swing-and-a-miss (or a swing-and-a-wide, however you want to look at it) at a wide open net late in the t...

Stanley Cup Preview: Kings vs. Devils

Oh, it will be fun. (Photo courtesy of Andy Marlin/Getty Images)

It’s a Stanley Cup Final no one saw coming—unless of course one watched the last month and a half of playoff hockey unfold. Two teams that admirably underperformed over the course of an eighty-two game regular season have quickly and loudly transformed into two of the most solid Cup contenders of the last few years.

On one side sits the Eastern Conference Champion Devils, fresh off a vanquishing of heated rival New York Rangers. I know I used the word “loudly” in just the previous paragraph, but the Rangers’ eventual undo...

Series Preview: (2) Blues vs. (7) Kings

Just as everyone expected, the Los Angeles Kings quickly dispatched of the President’s Trophy-winning Vancouver Canucks in five games. Also (and just as expected) was the latter squad’s complete no-show on offense, perpetual state of disarray on defense and lack of physicality in nearly every single one of the five games. What took place last week was a meltdown of an unacceptable degree. Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise.

However (!), just because Vancouver lost the series does not mean Los Angeles didn’t deserve to advance. Vezina Trophy candidate (and deserving winner) Jonath...

Who Are You Rooting For?

As a hockey fan first, and an Islander fan second I am still able to watch and enjoy the playoffs even though the Islanders are not involved. Now my question to all the Islander fans who read this blog (don't worry I'll give my answer too) is who are you rooting for in the second round of these playoffs. Whether it be your second favorite team, or your significant other's team or just a team you've always liked but won;t admit to it who are you backing? (Photo Credit: The Business of Sports)

The Bruins Finally Eliminate The Isles From Playoff Contention

If the Islanders won all of their remaining games and the Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabres lost their remaininga games, then the Isles would have done the unthinkable and made the playoffs for the first time in years. However, miraculous combinations of wins and losses are hard to come by these days, especially when you are playing against the defending Stanley Cup champions.

The Bruins scored six goals this afternoon for the third time this season against the Islanders, taking the season series with a 3-1-0 record. The loss finally elimanted the Islanders from playoff contention, concluding the thoughts of even the most hopeless fan that thought somehow they would squeak in. The focus now will shift to finishing the season with a winning record for the first time since Ted Nolan was the head coach and ending up somewhere between 9th and 11th place.

Kings seek home ice revenge against Detroit

Last time the Detroit Red Wings played the Los Angeles Kings, things ultimately went their way.

After being down 3-2 in the 2nd period, the Wings turned it up and got some late game heroics from Valterri Filppula and Darren Helm. On home ice, that seems to be the way the Wings get things done.

Now, the the 4th ranked Red Wings (Western conference) have to perform on the road, a task that has been less than stellar all season. The Kings will be looking to capitalize on the opportunity.

The Wings are not hopeless though, as they will have their all-star goalie Jimmy Howard back in net, after being out with an injured finger. Howard is third in the NHL in wins.

The Ki...
