Sound Tigers Weird Weekend

What began as a normal weekend for Bridgeport’s Nino Niederreiter, turned into one of the strangest in recent memory for the team. Niederreiter made is usual call to Pete’s Deli & News for a ‘to-go’ order on his way to the arena for the Sound Tigers morning skate before the team left for Providence for the first of three games in three days.
The game in Providence started like any other before getting out of hand with the Bruins scoring the opener after two minutes of play and Matt Donovan answering four minutes later with his eighth of the season. With two minutes and thirty seconds left in the opening period, Matt Watkins was given the whistle on a very questionable hooking call, and the game changed.

Islanders Name Scott Pellerin Sound Tigers Next Head Coach

On July 8, Brian Compton – Deputy Managing Editor for NHL.com – sent a message via twitter to Matt Moulson stating , ‘Manchester assistant coach Scott Pellerin could be in the mix for Bridgeport job.’ Moulson’s response was ‘If it’s true-great coach taught me a lot.’

On Wednesday July 18, the Sound Tigers made it official. Scott Jacque-Frederick Pellerin (Pelly) will become the eighth head coach of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

W.U. Grad next Sound Tiger?

Thirty teams in the NHL and each has an AHL affiliate to draw talent from as needed. All but two of these AHL clubs has a team in the ECHL providing a similar service. The two expectations are the Wild’s- Houston Aeros and the Islanders- Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

As a result, Coach Brent Thompson has relied heavily on his connections and experience in the ECHL to bring talented prospects up to Bridgeport. ‘Tommer’, as the players call him, was coach of the 2010-11 ECHL Kelly Cup Champion Alaska Aces and often looks there for talent.

An ever-changing line-up is part and parcel to being a coach in the American League. Bridgeport has already dressed seven different goalies and at least thirty-five skaters (forwards and defensemen), and it is just Ground Hog Day! The next call-up to Bridgeport might well be a hat-trick master from Frost Bite Falls, Minn.
