Game Preview: New York Islanders vs. Carolina Hurricanes

Raleigh, NC -- the New York Islanders haven’t beaten the Carolina Hurricanes in two previous meetings this season, but are hoping the third time is the charm tonight. The Isles will take a 14-5-2 road record into PNC Arena in search of their first victory against the franchise formerly known as the Hartford Whalers.

The Hurricanes are the only Eastern Conference team that the Islanders have yet to defeat during this truncated 2013 NHL season.

Simmonds' Four Point Night Dispatches Canes

Teams destined to miss the playoffs put on 60 minutes of hockey devoid of defense and chock full of a dominant performance by winger Wayne Simmonds in a 5-3 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night.

18 shots in the first period for the Flyers proved the insignificant defensive pressure by the Hurricanes. In fact, Jakub Voracek almost scored within the first 10 seconds of the game forcing starter Justin Peters had to make a desperate save to keep the puck from crossing the goal line.

Isles Can't Hold Lead, Fall To The Hurricanes 4-2

Looking to extend a two-game win streak, the New York Islanders began a 7-game home stretch on Sunday night against the Carolina Hurricanes. Unfortunately, the Isles gave up a two-goal lead and were defeated 4-2.

Already winning two games last season against the Canes, the Isles started backup goaltender Kevin Poulin in net. After waiving and ultimately sending Rick DiPietro down to the Bridgeport Soundtigers, the Isles called up Poulin to indefinitely serve as backup to Evgeni Nabakov.

Isles Power Play Not Enough In Fifth Straight Loss

The New York Islanders went into tonight's game against the Carolina Hurricanes with the hopes of ending a four-game losing streak before heading back to Madison Square Garden on Thursday night for their Valentine's Day re-match with the New York Rangers. Despite ending their scoreless power play streak, the Islanders would add another tally to the loss column with a 6-4 defeat on home ice.

Frans Nielsen opened the scoring with a power play goal just 2:48 into the hockey game with assists coming from Josh Bailey and Travis Hamonic. But former Islanders Tim Wallace would tie the game a little over mid-way through the first period, sending both teams to their respective locker rooms in a draw.

The middle frame would prove to be a wild one. John Tavares scored the Isles second power play goal after jumping on a rebound in front. Matt Moulson and Lubomir Visnovsky earned the helpers. But Canes forward Jeff Skinner would knot it up at two less than 30 seconds later with a snap shot in the high slot that Rick DiPietro never saw.

Hurricanes vs. Islanders Preview 2/11/13

After dropping their last four games, the Islanders will look to turn things around tonight when they face-off against the Carolina Hurricanes at home.

After dressing two suspended players, Josh Bailey and Lubomir Visnovsky, the Isles played a hard fought game against the Sabres on Saturday night. Despite outshooting Buffalo 43-15, the Isles fell short in a 3-2 loss, cementing a four-game losing streak. (Photo Credit: Beauty Playin 'Eh/Flickr)

Fist Pump: Danny Briere Wins It In OT For Flyers

Poor play in the third period almost cost the Flyers two points once again.

This time, Danny Briere came to rescue of those points, beating Cam Ward in overtime to send the Flyers to a 4-3 win over Carolina. It was their fourth straight game earning a point, going 3-0-1 on the four-game home stand.

It was also the second straight game the Flyers spend in overtime, having lost to the Panthers 3-2 in a shootout on Thursday.

The Flyers were able to end it before they got to the shootout this time. Briere broke into the zone and skated across the slot, faking a pass to Kurtis Foster before squeezing the wrister through Ward's legs to win the game.

Flyers Look to Cap Homestand Against Hurricanes

The Flyers are 2-0-1 on their four-game home stand so far. They conclude it against the team they started it against in Carolina. Can they cool down a hot Cam Ward and Eric Staal all while staying out of the penalty box?

Flyers Powerplay, Bryzgalov Come Alive In 5-3 Win Over Carolina

The Flyers were a dismal 5-for-40 on the powerplay heading into the game, good for 24th in the league at 12.5%.

That number increased after the Flyers' offensive outburst with the man advantage and it helped them snap a three-game losing streak with their 5-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes Saturday night.

The Flyers went 3-for-3 on the power play, by far their best special teams effort of the season.

Struggling Flyers Host Hurricanes

The Flyers look to snap a three-game losing streak against a hot Hurricanes team. The Flyers are also starting a four-game home stand in which they start and finish versus Carolina.

Carolina Hurricanes Fans And An Empty Arena

For the past few weeks, all that I have been able to do is drive by the PNC Arena and look into an empty parking lot and think about what could have been. These past two weeks were to be the culmonation of something new and exciting in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Being a hockey fan in North Carolina has its perks but it also has many drawbacks. First of all, the die-hard hockey fans in the area have migrated here from another state. Most of them enjoy it in its purity whenever possible. I pride myself on being a real Carolina Hurricanes fan but this week has been tough for me.

I was a major New York Rangers fan before North Carolina got a team. I have been a fan...
