The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Montreal Canadiens will both play their 24th games tonight.  The season is over quarter of the way over.  The newness of the season, the apprehension of how the new players will fit in and the tension of how each team will start is over.  Now it’s time to honestly look at the team and see exactly where each stands.

The New York Rangers paid a visit to the Bell Centre in Montreal. The game featured some nice hitting on both sides and some power play opportunities. The Rangers never got on track in this contest.

Power play goals by Cole and Plekanec paved the way for the Habs dominated game. Carey Price made 17 saves to record his second shutout in as many games played. 

The young, inexperienced defenders were certainly up to the task of protecting Price and the net. Emelin once again did some hitting and sound positional play.  Crisp clean clearing passes were the order of this evening.

A tale of two games in one. One in which the Habs dominated and the other where the team sat back and allowed the Sabres not only back in the game but lead to the eventual loss in a shootout.

In the first two periods the Habs dominated the Sabres and the player of the game was none other than Erik Cole. He played a whale of a game in regulation, finishing checks, going to the net and scoring a rare power play goal. The Sabres had no answer to the line of Cole, Pacioretty and Desharnais in regularion. They were buzzing the net and creating chances. After over a month and twelve games if the team you supported was 500 would you be happy?  If the team you followed was average without having its top defenceman in the line-up would you be happy?  Well that is where the Montreal Canadiens are.  They are just an average team sitting just out of a playoff position.  How they got here is a different story but how they move forward is more important.
