Islanders Look To 'Get A Piece Of The Rock' Thursday In New Jersey

The Isles are currently 2-1-1 on this trip after Tuesday night's destruction of the Pittsburgh Penguins. As always, the Islanders are led by their star John Tavares who has two goals and six assists for eight points in the season's first eight games.

Islanders Lose Second In A Row But Still Earn A Point Against Winnipeg

During the second intermission, MSG's Peter Ruttgaizer asked Islanders assistant coach Doug Weight what he wanted in the third period and Weight responded, "two goals."

The request was granted, and then some!

Tampa Bay Lightning Early Season Notes And Numbers

After three games the Tampa Bay Lightning are 2-1 with four points and are first in the Southeast division. While it is all but impossible to glean much information from such a small sample of games, the Bolts are buying into Coach Guy Boucher’s platform and are showing signs of improvement on defense and in the net. "It’s going to be defense first. That’s our mindset, because we’ve got the offense," said Boucher. (Photo/Susan Ferlita)

New York Islanders Vs. Tampa Bay Lightning on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The Islanders face off against The Tampa Bay Lightning at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Martin Luther King Jr. Day at 1 p.m.

The Islanders look to rebound from Saturday's opening night loss on home ice to the New Jersey Devils. The Devils beat the Islanders 2-1 behind strong goaltending from Martin Brodeur and some timely offense from Illya Kovalchuk, Travis Zajac and David Clarkson.

Isles Fall To Devils 2-1 In Home Opener

The New York Islanders opened their abbreviated 48-game season tonight with a 2-1 regulation loss at home to the defending Eastern Conference champs, the New Jersey Devils.

A sold out crowd was introduced to the 2012-2013 roster before puck drop. However, head coach Jack Capuano was missing, forcing assistant coach Doug Weight to take over along with Brent Thompson. Capuano missed the game due to a medical reason that was not disclosed to the media. It had been mentioned in the locker room that it is not life threatening, and that an update will likely be provided tomorrow.

But for the Isles, playing without their head coach behind the bench might have thrown the team for a bit of loop by the time the first period was underway. The Isles provided a lot of sloppy play in their end of the ice which resulted in poorly executed break outs and many mistakes in the neutral zone.

Isles Training Camp News & Notes

Day one of training camp for The New York Islanders has been completed as plenty of familiar faces took to the ice today to either look to impress the coaching staff, or get back into game shape.

However, one player who was not at camp was defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky.

Visnovsky has made it clear that he wants to remain with his team in the KHL, which is unsettling for Isles fans as well as his teammates. Arthur Staple of Newsday's recent report from camp today had quotes from some of the Islanders, including general manager Garth Snow, that indicated their displeasure with his actions (Photo Credit: bridgetds/Flick).

Will Garth Snow Improve The Islanders Roster For The 2013 Season?

Prior to the NHL lockout, the New York Islanders announced that the team will be moving to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn once the lease with Nassau County expires in 2015. Although this was good news for the local fans, this situation also provided a lot of work for team owner Charles Wang and General Manager Garth Snow (Photo Credit: Official New York Islanders/Flickr).

The Islanders need to be a team ready to compete by the time they enter their new home. A new arena means a new identity, and it cannot be the one that this team has maintained for the last few years.
