To Go Streit Ahead or Trade Streit Away?

At this moment, Islanders captain Mark Streit is sitting and wondering if he will receive a phone call from GM Garth Snow to tell him that he has been traded (Photo Credit: Robert Kowal/Flickr).

It was tweeted out yesterday by Darren Dreger of TSN and reinforced by Newsday reporter Arthur Staple that negotiations on a contract extension for Streit have stalled with the Islanders.

The club apparently does not want to trade the 35-year old defenseman and would much rather keep his veteran presence part of the late season playoff push. But unless things change, he will be a UFA by this summer.

Prospect Report 4/21/12: Playoff Updates

With the Canadian Junior playoffs still ongoing some of the Islanders prospects still have a chance to win the memorial cup while others are starting their summers early. I will take a look at some of the prospects that are still fighting for a championship and others that are practicing on their golf swing.
Ryan Strome and Mitchell Theoret both play for the Niagara Ice Dogs who recently won their second round match up and advanced to the OHL semi-finals where they will play the Ottawa 67s. Strome is continuing his strong post-season where he is third in the OHL in scoring with 17 points (6 goals, 11 assist) in just 10 games. He is a leader for the Ice Dogs offense and someone the team will rely upon as the playoffs continue. Theoret isn’t showing up on the score sheet as much as Strome but still has contributed two assist in seven games.

Prospect Report 3/7/12: UPDATED Defensive Edition

This edition of the prospect report brings me to take a second look at two of the Islanders best defensive prospects currently not in the Islanders system. Scott Mayfield and Andrei Pedan are both still involved in their college and junior seasons, and both are still impressing.

Scott Mayfield just recently finished the regular season for Denver University and is currently preparing for the first round of the conference playoffs. He finished the regular season playing in 35 games and scoring 3 goals to go with 8 assist. He also was able to maintain his +4 rating that he had the last time we heard from him. I was recently able to watch him play on the CBS college sports network and I was impressed. He wasn’t overly flashy but was a solid reliable defenseman, which is something the Islanders desperately need. (Photo Cerdit/Twitter.com @scottmayfield2)
