Randy Cunneyworth Making a Good Case for His Job with the Habs

Despite any semblance of a streak put on by the Montreal Canadiens in recent games, these days, it's pretty easy to see who's on the outside looking in with this team. We all know who the pending unrestricted free agents are, and how they might look valuable to other teams in the league. But there are dueling forces right now in this city, and it's all because of a coach that's either fighting to keep his job and shed an "interim" title, or prove to 29 general managers watching Canadiens games that he's a worthy, NHL-level head coach.

For such a seemingly nice guy, Randy Cunneyw...

Canadiens Win Streak Ends

The Carolina Hurricanes paid a visit to the Bell Centre on Monday night for a game with the Montreal Canadiens. Each team has been struggling this year, but it was the Hurricanes who came out with a win on this night, something that hasn't been easy to come by for the Hurricanes this season. It was a close match the whole way but in the end the Canadiens weren't able to score that final goal to tie the game, as the Hurricanes went on to win by a score of 5-3.

It was the Hurricanes who opened up the scoring early in the first period as Jiri Tlusty tipped in a shot from defenseman Bryan Allen just three minutes into the game. While that was the only goal to be seen in the open...

Game Day: Canadiens @ Maple Leafs

The Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs will once again do battle tonight, this time on the night that Mats Sundin's jersey number goes to the rafters of the Air Canada Centre. These two teams have been in different places all season, with the Maple Leafs fighting for a playoff spot and the Canadiens struggling to even come close. This is a welcome change, of course, for Maple Leafs fans, for which the situation is usually flipped, but for Habs fans, it's an unusual and painful experience.

Tonight the oldest and most historic rivalry in the NHL is reborn, and both teams d...

Game Day: Habs at a Crossroads As They Travel to Long Island

Last Sunday on the CBC broadcast of the Habs' win over the Jets, the network aired a sit down interview between Elliotte Friedman and Carey Price. The Canadiens' goaltender proceeded to describe this season for his team in one (and a half) words: "rollercoaster."

Well, that's an understatement. The Canadiens have had so many highs and lows this season that you'd think they were a malfunctioning hot air balloon. It really is the perfect way to describe them. On one hand, you have a team that's essentially one Hurricanes' win away (don't worry, those aren't coming any easier either...

Canadiens Win In Shootout

Montreal Canadiens 3 - 2 Pittsburgh Penguins (SO)

The Pittsburgh Penguins were visiting Montreal on Tuesday night for a match-up with the Montreal Canadiens. While it took a while for the scoring to begin, the game was a tight battle all the way through. With the two teams battling right past overtime into a shootout, it really could have gone either way. However, on this night is was the lowly Canadiens who got the extra point after Tomas Plekanec netted the winner in the shootout.

The scoring opened midway through ...

Game Day: Capitals @ Canadiens

The Washington Capitals are in Montreal on Saturday for an early match-up against the struggling Montreal Canadiens. These two teams, while both out of a playoff position, are now in completely different situations. The Capitals, just two points out of a playoff spot, will be looking to avoid the unthinkable; missing the playoffs with a roster largely similar to the one they iced a year ago, when they finished first in the East. The Canadiens on the other hand, tied for last in the conference, are probably just waiting for this awful year to end.

The bad n...

Time For the Habs To Part Ways With Hal Gill

When the Montreal Canadiens signed Hal Gill three years ago, everyone was wondering where the defenseman would fit into the line-up. He was big, he was slow, and he came into the organization at a time where it seemed as if the Habs had good depth on the back-end. Needless to say, the reaction wasn't entirely positive.

But over the course of the next two seasons, Gill would go on to prove everyone wrong. The road was often rocky, but the aging defenseman would often be a force to be reckoned with on the Canadiens' blue line, and definitely proved to be a valuable member of this team in more ways than one. While scoring goals a...

Canadiens Fall to Sabres 3-1

The Buffalo Sabres were in town on Tuesday night for a Northeast Division clash with the Montreal Canadiens. The Canadiens, just two points up from the lowly Sabres, were unable to hold off their division rivals in a game that saw the Habs lose by a score of 3-1. The Sabres, who were 14th in the Eastern Conference heading into this one, are now tied with the Habs, but thanks to having two more wins will be ahead of them in the standings.

Very little separated these two teams going into the match-up on Tuesday night. Both teams fans had high expectations at the beginning of the season, only ...

P.K. Subban Needs A Hero

Where have all the good veterans gone... and where are all the leaders? Where's our street-wise PK Subban, to fight the rising odds? Isn't there a white night upon a fiery steed? Late at night I toss and turn and dream of what PK needs.

He needs a hero. PK's holding out for a hero until the end of the night. He's gotta be strong, and he's gotta be fast, and he's gotta be fresh from the fight. Yes, he needs a hero, and we're holding out for him until the morning light. He's gotta be sure, and it's gotta be soon, because PK thinks he's larger than life.

Okay, that was terrible, and I apologize for it immediately. But you...

Raphael Diaz Will Join Carey Price at All-Star Weekend

Carey Price won't have to travel alone to Ottawa this weekend, for this year's edition of the All-Star Game Festivities.

We all expected the franchise goaltender to be named to the team as the Habs' represenatitive, and he was. But many speculated there was an outside chance that one of the Habs' several rookies would be joining him.

As you may very well know, on top of the 42 players that will be particating in the actual All-Star Game on Sunday, the league also selects twelve rookies to join those players for the Skills Competition the night before. Adam Larsson of the New Jersey Devils has arguably been the best rookie defenseman this season, and he wa...
