Big Guns Lead the Path to History

The Red Wings are now in elite company, with twenty straight home wins with their tonight's win coming from strong performances by the Wings' top players. The top-six forwards and top-four defenseman all came away with at least one point except for Jiri Hudler.

Nicklas Kronwall opened the scoring with a blast from the point while Brayden Schenn sat in the box for tripping. The goal was originally credited to Bertuzzi but he didn't deflect is as initially thought but Bert and Hank provided the assists. Schenn redeemed himself late in the period when Danny Briere capitalized off a botched clear by MacDonald and passed it to Schenn who scored easily.

Red Wings look to extend the franchise record against Anaheim

The number 19 means a lot in the Motor City.

It was the jersey worn by Steve Yzerman during his career in the NHL. The "Captain" as he is sometimes referred to, helped bring 3 Stanley Cups to Detroit in the span of six years. Take a trip to Joe Louis Arena and one will see that number hanging above the ice.

Tonight, that number is something magical once again. As they are currently sitting on top the Central division, the Western conference and even more important, the NHL, the Detroit Red Wings are currently making history as they hold an 18 game win streak on home ice, a franchise record. The NHL record is 20, held by the Boston Bruins.

To say that the Wings ...

Ericsson: The Luckiest Player in the NHL

It comes to nobody's surprise that even with some serious injuries this season, the Detroit Red Wings are still sitting pretty high in the NHL.

Even without their star goalie Jimmy Howard (finger), the Wings are not only on top of the Central Division, five points ahead of the St. Louis Blues, but also the Western Conference. The Wings have some star power in Pavel Datsyuk and Johan Franzen, and contributions from Filppula, Zetterberg and Hudler have given the team some great options in every game.

Is it safe to say that there are some players who need work? Of course.

Zetterberg's production may have gotten a slow start, but what the left winger lacks in goals t...

Shootout Success Supplies Sixteenth Straight At Home

The Red Wings are now riding a six game winning streak thanks in no small part to their new found success in the shootout. Detroit was able to secure their sixteenth straight win at Joe Louis by beating the NHL-worst Blue Jackets 3-2.

Detroit didn’t show much life at the start of the game and Ryan Russell of Columbus struck first at 8:51 off a rebound. The Red Wings tied it at 1 off a wicked wrister by Kronwall at 11:34 of the first. The only penalty in the first was a hooking call on Tomas Holmstrom. The Blue Jackets outshot Detroit 7-5.

The Red Wings came out stronger in the second and carried much of the p...

Zetterberg: To Worry or Not To Worry

Three seasons into a historic contract, Zetterberg is on pace for career lows. Is this cause for concern or is it too premature to worry about one of Detroit's star forwards?

Henrik (Zata, Z, Hank, Swedish Phenom, the Next Forsberg, etc) Zetterberg has been my favorite Wing even before his debut. Hank made some noise as a rookie, with 22 goals and 22 assists. He finished second in Calder voting behind defenseman Barret Jackman who won because Al Macinnis went down with an injury and he had to carry the Blues' defense.

Zetterberg has been a top Wing and for several years Hockeytown citizens debated "which Euro Twin is better?" Both Z and Pav were great t...

Wings Set Franchise Record At 15 Home Game Wins Against The Sabres

The Detroit Red Wings win their 15th consecutive home game against the Buffalo Sabres. The Wings broke the past franchise records for consecutive home game wins and helped Howard receive his 10th career shutout!

First Period: The first period appeared to be a very successful period for the Wings. With only one penalty and three goals leading them to the second period, anyone would be assured. However, the Wings and Sabres fought back and forth for the puck which is proven in the shots on goal stats for the period. The puck control was not as solid as it could be for Detroit. A great first goal from Zetterberg took the Wings to a 1 to 0 lead. Toward...

Wings Go For 14th Straight Home Win on the 14th

With Friday the 13th in the past, Detroit faces off against Chicago today on home ice for a nationally televised matinee. The Wings are coming off a 3-2 comeback victory against Phoenix that was Mike Babcock's 400th win and Jimmy Howard's 100th. Detroit seeks to tie their franchise record for consecutive home wins set during the 1964-65 season. Only two points separate the teams, with St. Louis sitting in between them.

The two previous games have been just as close as their place in the standings with both being decided 3-2. Chicago won once in regulation and Detroit won last week in overtime. Today's game should be no different.

The Blackhawks' are missing sco...

Wings Help Howard Reach 100th Career Win Against Phoenix

Detroit Red Wings steal their 13th consecutive home game from the Phoenix Coyotes!

First Period: The Wings came out strong at the start of the period. It took 9 minutes of playing before a goal was made. Phoenix was the one to steal the first goal, which was scored by Vrbata. After Vrbata’s goal, the Wings seemed to have a rough second half of the period. The last couple minutes had good pressure from the Wings though. With only 51 seconds left of the first, the Wings finally got a shot past Smith. Filppula made a beautiful goal with an assist from White. The period ended at a 1 to 1 tie. SOG: 13 Detroit vs 9 Phoenix.

Second Period: The...

Wings' Second Half Starts on the Island

The Wings travel to Long Island tonight in the first game of the second half of the season. Detroit would like to improve their performance on the road (11-12) and have an opportunity against the Islanders currently sitting in last place in the East. It's not prudent to assume Detroit will have an easy time against the Islanders who have won the teams' last three meetings.

Jimmy Howard is back in net tonight and will be looking for his 100th career win after being denied by the Maple Leafs on Saturday. The Wings will go with the same lineup they used against Chicago in hopes of starting the second half strong. They will need to produce a stronger start than their weekend gam...

Red Wings and Maple Leafs prepare for Original Six showdown

It's the only time this season these Original Six teams will be facing each other, and right now Detroit currently has the bragging rights after a victory at Joe Louis Arena last March.

The Red Wings survived their last game against the Dallas stars with a 5-4 victory, while the Maple Leafs dominated against Winnipeg in a 4-0 victory that saw goals from Phil Kessel, Clarke MacArthur, Mikhail Grabovski and Tim Connolly.

Detroit is fighting to get the top spot in the Central division right now, and are only a single point behind the Blackhawks. The Leafs on the other hand are in the middle of their division, but are closely chasing the Senators. So what could mak...
