Still Without Power On The Island; Isles Lose 1-0 To Devils

The New York Islanders went into today's game against the New Jersey Devils hoping to make-up for their overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers but came up short, losing 1-0 to another division rival.

It was the sixth time this season that the Islanders have been shutout, a glaring reason why this team has struggled to win hockey games.

"Obviously we didn't score. If you don't score you're not going to win a hockey game," said Islanders captain Mark Streit to me after the game. "We had chances, faced a pretty good goalie, had chances on the PP, we just didn't score but I still think there's a lot of good things we did.I thought tha...

Their Worst Game Of The Season, Isles Lose 6-0 To The Bruins

"When you play this game you need to play with fire, you need to play with passion, you need to play with determination, you need to play with desperation. You need to have ice bags after the game, maybe a little blood dripping right now. When you lace your skates up the guy across from you, the guy on the right, on the left of you need to know that you got their back and we're going to play for one another. And that just didn't happen tonight and I don't have the answers why."

This is how head coach Jack Capuano started his post-game press conference after a humiliating 6-0 loss to the Boston Bruins. Fired up and with his blood boiling, Capuano came out like a...

Josh Bailey, Meet Michael Grabner

Imagine this:

You are 18-years-old.  You have just completed the best hockey season of your entire life – racing up draft boards from a low-mid round pick into a projected mid first round pick.  It is an incredibly exciting night, as you sit there with your family waiting and hoping to hear your name called.

You watch as commissioner Gary Bettman announces the Islanders trading down 2 picks.  Then trading down 2 more picks.  The Islanders staff takes the stage ready to announce their ninth overall pick, and you are still not thinking too much of it.

Then you hear it.

“The New York Islanders select Josh Bailey.”

Islanders Look To Rebound Against Vancouver

After losing a tough game to the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday, the Islanders look to finish off their West Coast road trip on a happy note. They will be facing the Vancouver Canucks, a team that made it to the Stanley Cup Finals this past season.

The last time these two teams faced each other, both teams got a point, but the Canucks came out with two of them, defeating the Islanders in a shootout.

The Canucks bring along former Islander Roberto Luongo, who has been struggling so far this season along with the rest of the Canucks squad. Only having 17 points so far this season, the Canucks will look to get over the .500 plateau. So the Islanders need to expect a strong game o...

Islanders Prepare for Avalanche

“And with the first overall selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, the New York Islanders are proud to select John Tavares.”

After months of speculation leading up to the 2009 NHL draft, the Islanders rewarded their fan base after a long and painful season by using the first pick to select the longtime #1 ranked player in the draft.  It has been said that when top prospects remain at the top of a draft board for a long period of time, analysts tend to search so hard for their flaws that when they finally find one, it becomes significantly over exaggerated.

So it was with Tavares, who was ranked at the top of his draft class since about age 14. ...

Montoya Minutes: Al Needs To Play

Al Montoya was the surprise starter for the Islanders home opening loss to the Florida Panthers back on October 8th when both Rick DiPietro and Evgeni Nabokov were healthy and capable of starting the game. DiPietro, who had been battling injuries for what had seemed like forever, probably expected to dress for the season opener preparing to embark on another attempt to return to glory. But that wasn't the case.

Head coach Jack Capuano chose to go with El Cubano, a goaltender that the Islanders acquired in a trade with the Phoenix Coyotes after injuries seem to strike every single net-minder in the 2011 season. Montoya seemingly won the starting position between himself and Kevin...

Islanders Rock the Red Hot Caps

The Islanders halted their 5 game losing streak, defeating the Capitals by a score of 5-3.  PA Parenteau added the go-ahead goal with under 2 minutes to play, and John Tavares added an empty netter to seal the victory for the home team.

Coach Jack Capuano finally decided to try new line combinations to spark the offense, and the players responded in a big way.  It took a period to find their in-game chemistry, but Capuano’s new look Isles came up big in the final 40 minutes of play.

The Capitals jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Frans Neilsen added a goal early in the second period to cut the lead in half.  Neilsen took a shot from just inside the blue...

Islanders Look to Ground the Jets

The bad news: The Islanders head into Thursday night’s game against the Winnipeg Jets having lost 5 straight games.  The good news: The Islanders recorded a point in each of their last two games, falling in a shootout to the Penguins, and in overtime (amid a controversial call) to the Sharks on Saturday.

Head Coach Jack Capuano has had since Saturday night’s game to focus on getting his team back to playing 60 minutes of winning hockey.  The Islanders controlled much of the play in their past two games, but fell to a red-hot Marc Andre Fleury and were victims of a referee’s error which resulted in the Sharks’ game-winning goal in overtime.&nbs...

Let's Try This Again, Shall We? GAMEDAY: Isles @ Penguins

After being shutout by the Penguins on Tuesday night in a brutal loss, the Islanders travel to Pittsburgh to tie up the home and home. Putting Tuesday night's loss far behind them, the Islanders seem to have some good news as defenseman Milan Jurcina could to be ready to go for tonight's game.

Although Jack Capuano has yet to announce tonight's starting goaltender, it is irrelevant if the Islanders' offense cannot do their job. The Penguins are too good of a team for the Isles to rely only on their goaltender to get them the win. Offense will most definitely be key in this matchup. But let's not forget the defense; The Penguins that faced the Islanders on Tuesday...

Islanders vs (Some of the) Penguins

Preview:  The New York Islanders are returning home after a Florida road trip where the team experienced more sun than fun.  It was a trip which saw two games, two losses, and a continued futility to achieve secondary scoring.  Not the recipe for success this season drawn up by coach Jack Capuano and GM Garth Snow, and not what the team envisioned after jetting off to a 3 – 1 start.

The Pittsburgh Penguins head into Long Island for the first half of a home-and-home series against the Islanders playing some of the best hockey in the league.  Despite missing all-world talents in Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, the Penguins just keep winning. ...
